Ventura Wildcat Basketball Inc. is grateful to everyone who made this a memorable season. Special thanks to:

Wildcat Families

Thank you to all of the Wildcat girls and their families for your enthusiasm and good sportsmanship.

Nora and Michele Flynn

The Flynn’s did a fabulous job as official scorekeepers, yet that is not all they have done for the Wildcats this year. Both of them volunteered their time as assistants at the Ventura Seaside Tournament, a vital association for the Wildcats, and they volunteered five hours of their time as Wildcat representatives at the Ventura SummerFest Fair on June 5, 2010. They also supervised operations of the Wildcat Clinic (May 10-13th 2010) and assisted in overseeing and meeting with the high school girls from various high schools. Nora was team mom for one of the original Fusion travel teams while Michele was a player.

Coaches

Great thank yous go out to our coaches, Jim Pando, Jared Smith, Doug Lakin, Bill Smith, John Collet, and Jayson Root along with Rob Flinn who worked with the Leopards and volunteered to supervise our championship final. In the Wildcats, it doesn’t matter whatsoever how many wins a coach has but rather how much he builds life-winners.

We seek living examples of how to handle stress and adversity with mature conduct, communication, and most of all compassion.

The meaningful trophies aren’t made of gold; they’re made of ponytails and smiles.

Rich Romine and the Ventura County Star

Rich has been so gracious in featuring the Wildcats in weekly publications of the Ventura County Star. We believe August 10th will have feature reports and photos of today’s championship game. Pick up a copy of the VC Star or visit their website and “search” for Ventura Wildcats.

CAPS-tv

Todd Thayer is a long-time friend and his support of the Wildcats over the years has been immensely important. Our 2010 game was the same day as the VC Fair parade so we did not have the benefit of three cameras and a full tv crew, but Hirro did a great job as a one-man production team and our thanks to Todd and CAPS is as great as it is sincere.

Tom West

Tom West (middle) and Nora Flynn (right)

For those of you who have followed high school sports on television, Tom West is a familiar face and voice. This is his fourth year volunteering his time and talents to make our championship final so complete. We are so greatly privileged to have Tom with us and to have become friends with a person of his talent.

John Collet

Thank you to John Collet once again for leading the fun-n-games prelude to the championship game. John takes that task on with great creativity and a lot of heart. John also stepped up as our photographer.

Broadcast Assistants

The presence of television requires extra help and we are grateful to Rob Flinn for supervising the championship game; to Lindsey Moser for stepping in as one of our official scorekeepers; and to Makayla Flinn, Savannah Vizzo, Sophia Roberts, and Casey Collet for handling the broadcast-resource scorekeeping.

Eight Pumas score . . .

Pumas Run the Table

26-18

In a game that was televised by CAPS-tv, announced by the renowned Tom West, and reported by Rich Romine of the Ventura County Star, All-Wildcat forward Amy Jameson scored nine points to lead eight players onto the scoreboard as the E. Ventura Optimist Pumas completed an undefeated season with a 26-18 win over the Jay’s Automotive Leopards in the championship game of the 18th Annual Courtney Davis Memorial Wildcat Classic at the Ventura Missionary gym on August 7, 2010.

After Jennifer Orozco, this year’s Top Cat Award winner, put the second-seeded Leopards up 3-0 with ferocious defense and power drives, Elle Gaston notched a tight shot from the right lane for the Pumas. Jameson then went to her familiar playbook, stealing the ball and racing to a left-handed layup and the Pumas’ first lead.

Amy Jameson gave the Pumas their first lead with a left-handed layup.

The Leopards ran off nine straight points, six of them by Clarissa Magallon, and were up by four with 90 seconds left in the first half. Seven of the Leopards nine points came from the free throw line where Magallon made four straight.

It was noted at halftime that all but four of the Leopards’ first half points were free throws which suggested their inability to score from the field and an omen of note for the second half.

As expected, the game was one of streaks and the Pumas powered their way to 11 straight points, nine of them coming from their front line of Brittany “B-Rod” Rodriguez, Daphne Sajor, Kim Cagle, and Jameson. Add a nice shot by guard Brooklyn Kinsler and the Pumas were in front by seven.

The “omen of note” from the first half became reality in the second as the Leopards did not score at all in the third quarter.

Madison Stevenson turned the Leopards’ scoreboard on again and started a six point revolution with help from Elissa Root’s drive, foul, free throw, and score midway through the fourth quarter. All-Wildcat forward Clarissa Magallon got the Leopards to within a single point but it was the last score for the remaining 4:32 of the game.

Nicole Aggarwal nailed a three from the top of the key to give the Pumas a four point cushion, 22-18. Jameson added a free throw as the Pumas played keepaway. Scoring culminated when Jameson launched a 25 foot three-pointer from the right side that had coach Bill Smith off the bench with panic —- until the ball banked in and Jameson nodded back with a reassuring smile.

Although the score was close throughout, the Pumas had a clear advantage from a scrimmage standpoint with 11 field goals that included two three pointers while the Leopards were held to five field goals and no three pointers.

Puma scoring was augmented by four points from Elle Gaston and three by Nicole Aggarwal.

Magallon’s 10 points led all scorers.

The Pumas ended the season as one of the few undefeated league and undefeated tournament teams as well as one of the few to win back-to-back tournaments.

Their 26-18 win was nearly a duplicate of their 27-17 win over the Leopards on July 7, 2010.

The Leopards finished in second place in both the regular season and the tournament.

Pumas (9-0) vs Leopards (7-2)

Top Two Seeds

2010 Championship Final

______________________________________________________________________

Jameson soars in 4th quarter . . .

Pumas Hold Off Lions

28-25

Amy Jameson came up with four steals and six points in the final seven minutes to lead the undefeated E. Ventura Optimist Pumas to a perilous 28-25 win over the determined and fourth-seeded, Dole Foods Lions in semifinal action at the Ventura Missionary gym on Wednesday night in perhaps the most exciting game of the 2010 season.

Jameson used a combination of steals, drives, and free throws to propel the Pumas from a 19-19 tie into a permanent lead, albeit never a safe one. It was Jameson’s steal and serpentine drive that gave the Pumas a five point lead with time running out and assured the top-ranked Pumas of the win.

Despite an 8-0 first quarter, the Pumas just could not break away to a safe margin. By halftime, the Lions’ Hailie Mace had snared a half-dozen steals and an assist and with Nikki Harasta taking a pass from Katie Byrne on the right wing, the Lions tied the score.

A defensive struggle at the beginning of the second half was broken by an amazing, laser-like pass from Harasta through three defenders, connecting with Trianna in full stride for a layup, a foul, and a made free throw to tie the score once again.

Rebecca Negrete and Kim Cagle scored back-to-back for the Pumas but Trianna hit the front end of a one-and-one, Mace connected on a three from back court, and when Mace stole the ball and scored, the underdog Lions had their first – and only lead – with a minute left in the third.

The Pumas went to their tall and strong front line with Brittany Rodriguez powering up for four points in three minutes and, coupled with Jameson’s late-game chaos, the Pumas breathed a sigh and set their schedules for the 18th Annual Courtney Davis Memorial Wildcat Classic final on August 7th.

Jameson led all scorers with 10 and Rodriguez had eight. The Pumas likely would have made more of their power underneath had it not been for the superb defense of forward Alejandra Cano who not only did excellent deny work on the blocks but near-perfect footwork to front players when they moved to the key.

Mace led the Lions with nine and Trianna had six.

The teams were a combined 7-for-29 at the free throw line.

Twenty one straight points . . .

Leopards Sprint into Final

27-16

The Jay’s Automotive Leopards held the third-seeded Bob Davis Team Jaguars scoreless for 23 minutes on their way to an impressive 27-16 win. The feat is even more astounding when one notes that the Jaguars were the League’s top scoring team at nearly 30 points a game during the regular season.

All Wildcat veterans Clarissa Magallon and Jennifer Orozco scored the first four points of the game before the Jaguars forged a tie with one 14 foot shot by Leah Kopp and another by Katie Campbell with two minutes remaining the first quarter.

It was the last Jaguar point until Madeline Gremaud struck with a minute gone in the fourth quarter. By then, the Pumas were up by 19.

Gremaud’s success was infectious as Kopp went on a binge of steals and fastbreak charges to the basket resulting in six points, four Leopard fouls, and five Kopp free throws.

Korie Rowell responded for the Leopards with a putback in the middle of the key and Katie Campbell closed the game with a courageous three-pointer for the Jaguars.

Magallon and Orozco led the Leopards with nine points while Rowell had six. The Jaguars were concerned about Rowell’s prowess around the basket and with 10 rebounds, the tall center justified those concerns.

Kopp had seven and Campbell five for the Jaguars.

Coach Bill Smith couldn’t be upset when Amy Jameson banked in a 3-pointer during a competitive Ventura Wildcat League tournament championship game on Saturday.

The Pumas capped a perfect season with a 26-18 victory over the Leopards in the Courtney Davis Memorial Classic at the Ventura Missionary Church gym.

The Pumas (10-0) were holding a one-point lead when Rebecca Negrete*** sank a 3-pointer to make it 22-18. Despite missing crucial free throws down the stretch, the hustle of the Pumas resulted in a second straight league championship.

(*** The official scorekeeper and television footage affirm that the three pointer was by Nicole Aggarwal)

Jameson hit a free throw with 39.1 seconds left to make 23-18.

Jameson’s final 3-pointer with 18 seconds rounded out the scoring. Jameson finished with nine points.

Elle Gaston made her first basket of the season and then scored later to finish with four points, second best on the team.

Smith said the Pumas have struggled all season at the foul line.

One game the Pumas were 1-11 and another game 1 for 6.

“We worked hard in practice to make more free throws,” said Smith

“It was a close, close game,” said league director Bob Albrant..

“One team goes off and the other couldn’t respond,” said Albrant. “It was a competitive game.”

Albrant was pleased with the season outcome.

“It was a great crowd. Loud and enthusiastic, which is always good,”

The league has been playing basketball since 1993.

The league honors the late Davis, a former Buena cheerleader and student, for her sportsmanship and character which she lived. Her father Bob has been a longtime volunteer coach and referee for the league.

Albrant said life lessons are more important than winning basketball games.

Clarissa Magallon paced the Leopards with 10 points. Jennifer Orozco added three points. Both Magallon and Orozco were members of the championship Pumas team in 2009. Jameson scored 10 points in Wednesday’s 28-25 semifinal win over the Lions.

Magallon scored nine in a 27-16 semifinal win over the Jaguars.

There’s a Pumas alert at the Ventura Missionary Church gym.

The reigning Ventura Wildcat Basketball League champion Pumas opened their 18th season by defeating the Panthers, 39-12, in a rematch of the 2009 girls’ summer league championship game.

In other Wildcat action on Saturday, the Lions rallied to edge the Bearcats 28-27 and the Leopards nipped the Jaguars 22-20.

Amy Jameson scored 15 points to lead the Pumas and take the scoring lead. Brooklyn Kinsler added eight points and Kim Cagle seven.

Jameson was the Top Cat Award winner last season for her participation, commitment, performance and sportsmanship.

Lindsey Moser led the Panthers with six points.

Clarissa Magallon scored seven points, including her team’s final four in the Leopards’ 22-20 win over the Jaguars.

It was all Bearcats early as Makayla Flinn sank four 3-pointers for all 12 points.

The Lions’ Nikki Harrasta made a free throw for her team’s lone point to end a 12-0 run for the Bearcats.

Hailie Mace scored eight and Savannah Vizzo added six to fuel the comeback win. Sophia Robets scored four, Athena Giron three and Camille Bern added two.

Lions coach Jared Smith watched his girls battle the entire game.

Now in his seventh year as a Wildcat League coach, Smith said the circuit is competitive.

“It’s a step above the city league and a step below club,” said Smith.

Smith coaches the Fusion, a club team from the Wildcat organization.

Smith attributed his team’s early woes to having butterflies.

“Nikki (Harrasta) is by far a better player this season,” said Smith after she made two crucial layups to seal the win.

Smith credits the Bearcats.

“They were a real good group and they got us on 3-point shooting,” said Smith.

Lions’ tandem too much for Panthers . . .

Lions in Semifinals

28-26

In a game that was never separated by more than five points, the Dole Foods Lions prevailed over the RGA Family Panthers 28-26 to advance to the semifinal round of the 18th Annual Courtney Davis Memorial Wildcat Classic.

Hailie Mace and Anika Trianna combined for 21 points to lead the fourth seeded Lions; and it was the free throws of Nikki Harrasta down the stretch that preserved the win against the determined Panthers.

The Panthers opened the game well as guard Jazmin Carrasco squared up for a three pointer from the top of the key just 29 seconds into the game. The Panthers held the lead until Mace curled to the basket for one score followed by a free throw and a steal with a layup by Anika Trianna. The Lions held a four point lead after 10 minutes but, more importantly perhaps, they had the momentum of seven straight points.

The Panthers responded with another three from the top of the key, this time by Lindsey Moser, and with two subsequent scores by Aubrey Knight and a basket Brianna Eubanks off of a Knight assist, the Panthers were up 12-9.

The Lions clamped down on the defensive end while Mace, Trianna, and Harrasta went unchecked for three straight scores and a 15-12 lead at the half.

After a Moser layup tied it 21-21, Mace struck from the left corner and a minute later from inside the key off of a Harrasta assist and the Lions were once again up by four.

Knight cut the lead in half when she rebounded a miss shot.

Harrasta pressed the issue and was fouled on three successive possessions which led to six free throws, three of which she made and with 1o seconds to go, the Lions had their biggest lead, 28-23.

Moser ended the game for the Panthers with her team’s third three pointer just before the buzzer sounded.

Mace had 11 and Trianna 10 for the Lions. Trianna’s steals and strong drives were a problem for the Panthers who committed 22 fouls and lost power forward Andrea Centeno to fouls midway through the fourth quarter.

The Panthers were led in scoring by Knight with eight points, seven steals, and seven rebounds, some coming from following her own shots from the three point line. Moser added seven for the Panthers but was also hampered by fouls in the second half. Centeno finished with five points, Carrasco four and Eubanks two.

The Lions were 4-for-18 from the free throw line. The Panthers made 1-for-4.

Moser and Centeno were advised that they had earned places on the 2010 All Wildcat team.

Aubrey Knight was everywhere with steals, rebounds, and leading the Panthers in scoring.

Lindsey Moser tied it at 21-21 on this shot with 7:36 left to play.

Anika Trianna’s incessant drives to the basket were part of the cause for the Panthers’ 22 fouls. Anika had 10 points.

Brianna Eubanks (white) returned the lead to the Panthers in the second quarter.

Hailie Mace led the Lions with 11 points.

Campbell scores 14 . . .

Jaguars Advance

32-23

Katie Campbell proved why she is the 2010 Ventura Wildcat Basketball League scoring champion as the sinewy guard used a variety of shots to amass 14 points and lead the Bob Davis Team Jaguars to a 32-23 win over the Police Officers Association of Oxnard Bearcats.

After a 2-2 tie, Lexi Woodward scored from the left short-corner to give the Jaguars a lead they would not release. With subsequent scores from forward Angie Castaneda and Campbell, the Jaguars were up by six after the first quarter. The lead rose to nine points when Kailly Wolff hit from 16 feet out on the left side and Madeline Gremaud stuck two three pointers in less than four minutes.

Athena Giron launched a three-pointer of her own to bring momentary hope to the Bearcats, but Leah Kopp got loose in full court transition to close out the half with the Jaguars up by nine.

The quarter was all Campbell for the Jaguars as she took four successive assist passes from Hannah Harrader who had come up with four successive steals. Campbell converted on all four while the Bearcats misfired except for forward Savannah Vizzo who drove for two scores.

A late-game surge by Vizzo was worth another four points plus a free throw but with the teams trading baskets by Castaneda for the Jaguars and Sophia Roberts of the Bearcats, the Jaguars moved forward into the semifinals and one win there would put them into the championship final in a tournament that is named for the daughter of the Jaguars’ sponsor.

Despite the scoreboard, the Bearcats had three players on the 2010 All Wildcat team with Vizzo, Roberts, and Makayla Flinn.

Vizzo led the ‘Cats with a dozen points while Gremaud added six for the Jaguars.

Hannah Harrader (left) had four successive steals at the start of the fourth quarter; each one resulting in a score by Katie Campbell. Athena Giron (ball) pulled up for a three that energized the Bearcats in the second quarter.

Savannah Vizzo (ball) had 12 points and is one of three All Wildcat players from the Bearcats. Madeline Gremaud sparked the Jaguars with two three pointers in less than four minutes of the first half.

Katie Campbell (green) is a 2010 Coaches All Star, 2010 All Wildcat, and 2010 Wildcat League scoring champion. She led the Jaguars with 14 points. Makayla Flinn (red) is a top-5 three point shooter, two-time championship finalist, and is also a 2010 All Wildcat player.

Lions Finish in Third Place Tie

32-25

Nikki Harrasta put up 14 points before fouling out as her Dole Foods Lions upended the Bob Davis Jaguars 32-25 to put the two teams into a tie for third place in the final 2010 Wildcat League standings.

With the Jaguars leading 21-16 midway through the third quarter, the Lions rallied for eight straight points led by guard Anika Trianna’s two field goals and two free throws, the last of which gave the Lions the lead for good entering the fourth quarter.

Harrasta led the Lions and the League in scoring with 14 while Trianna’s had eight and Hailie Mace six.

The Jaguars were led in scoring by Katie Campbell with 11 and Leah Kopp with seven. Campbell has won the 2010 Wildcat League scoring championship.

The Jaguars were awarded the third seed in the post season tournament by virtue of superior head-to-head results with the Lions as well as seeding points.

Leopards Win Second Seeding

22-12

The Jay’s Automotive Leopards ran off 12 straight points then held on to post a 22-12 win over the Police Officers Association of Oxnard Bearcats in the final game of the regular season.

Despite the heroics of Bearcats’ guard Camille Bern, who scored all but two of the ‘Cats points, the Leopards were in control throughout the game.

Bern led the Bearcats with 10 points. The Bearcats had plenty of shots from three guards, Makayla Flinn, Samantha Ramos-Barba, and Athena Giron, but they just didn’t dropping through.

The ‘Cats were furthered hampered by the absence of two starting front court players.

While the Bearcats’ offense sputtered, its defense was on fire, holding the Leopards to their second fewest points of the season.

The Leopards spread scoring around as Clarissa Magallon, Jennifer Orozco, and Korie Rowell each had six points. Rowell also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Pumas Sweep 2010 Wildcat League

28-14

The East Ventura Optimist Pumas used an 8-0 start and 12 points by Amy Jameson to post 28-14 win over the RGA Family Panthers and win the 2010 Ventura Wildcat Basketball League with a perfect 8-0 record. The Pumas now enter the postseason tournament as the League’s number one seed.

Jameson scored six of the Pumas first eight points with a steal and left-hand layup, a shot in the left lane, and another on a circuitous drive down to the left baseline and from there, to the basket.

The Panthers closed to within seven at the start of the second half when Jazmin Carrasco took an inbounds pass on the right side and executed a near-perfect catch-and-shoot from 14 feet out.

From there, it was all Pumas as Jameson reeled off six unanswered points and tricky guard Rebecca Negrete arched up a shot from inside the key. In the space of five minutes, the lead had bulged to 17 points and the Pumas’ perfect season was in place.

Negrete had six points to compliment Jameson’s work while Tatum Behrens played a great game and led the Panthers in scoring along with Lindsey Moser.

The Panthers played well despite the loss and might have pulled off the upset except for turnovers.

Lions Put It Away With 49 Seconds Left

34-31

Guard Hailie Mace put up 12 points in the first half and 16 for the game to lead the Dole Foods Lions into fourth place in the Wildcat League with a 34-31 win over the competitive Police Officers Association of Oxnard Bearcats.

Mace had six points in the first five minutes to overtake an early Bearcat lead, sprung on the rifle three-pointer of Makayla Flinn. With help from Lilianna Preciado’s steal, assist, and score, the Lions finally got the lead for good just before the first quarter buzzer sounded.

Sophia Roberts (52) continues to be the second leading scorer for the Summer.

The Bearcats were determined to use their tandem inside punch of Sophia Roberts and Savannah Vizzo as the pair came through with 14 of the ‘cats 19 first half points.

Mace was undeterred as she had three steals, two rebounds, and four more points to start the second quarter and with Anika Trianna stepping in front of passes, launching assists, and scoring, the Lions built their biggest lead of five points midway through the second quarter.

Roberts and Flinn combined for the final four points of the half and the Bearcats were down by just one at intermission.

The second half was never separated by more than four points as Trianna suddenly pulled up for a 14 footer to make it 32-28 midway through the final frame.

A minute later, Camille Bern found the mark from the three-point line and with 4:07 still showing, the Bearcats were down just 32-31. Neither team could score the rest of the way except for a final floater by Mace down the left lane.

Mace was the League’s highest scorer for the weekend with 16 points. Trianna added six for the Lions.

Roberts had 12 points, Vizzo 8, and Flinn 8 for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats once again proved their competitiveness but once again fell just short of victory. In seven games, the Bearcats have lost four times by three points or less and only once by more than seven points. The ‘Cats close the regular season against the Leopards on Wednesday, then open the 18th Annual Courtney Davis Memorial Wildcat Classic against either the Jaguars or the Leopards.

Jameson changes everything . . .

Pumas Win Title Outright

22-14

Amy Jameson needed only five minutes to turn a close game between the league’s top two teams into a double-digit lead for the East Ventura Optimists Pumas as the Pumas won the 2010 regular season championship with a 22-14 victory over the Bob Davis Team Jaguars. The win gives the Pumas the top seed in the Wildcat Classic championship tournament.

After a steal and score by Rebecca Negrete to start the third quarter, Jameson stole the ball twice, scored each time, then got free on the left side for her sixth point in five minutes to put the Pumas up 19-6.

Amy Jameson’s five brilliant minutes put the Pumas on top.

After going scoreless for 14 straight minutes, the Jaguars finally got some help when fleet forward Leah Kopp picked off a pass and raced for one score, then took an assist from Katie Campbell for a long two-pointer and enough momentum to cause Puma coach Bill Smith to call timeout.

But once again, the Jaguar guns fired blanks, this time for eight minutes until Kopp raced to a right-handed layup. Campbell followed with another score and with 3:46 to play, the Jaguars were down 21-14.

Leah Kopp returned to her high-flying ways and led the Jaguars in scoring.

And again, the Jaguars renowned firepower lacked flint and despite some scoring woes for the Pumas, the Jaguars never threatened.

Apart from Jameson’s third quarter spark and the Pumas scoring 14 of their points in 10 minutes, the game was a compilation of scoring vexation. Nonetheless, the Pumas completed their run to the top and each Puma player was handed a Summer League Champion t-shirt to honor her accomplishment.

Jameson led all scorers with nine points while Negrette and Brittany Rodriguez each had four for the Pumas.

Kopp scored eight for the Jaguars and Campbell six. The Jaguars still have a chance to finish in second place if the Bearcats defeat the Leopards on Wednesday. The Jaguars would then be declared second place since they hold a one point advantage over the Leopards in head-to-head competition.

O’Rocket plus Magallon equals 25 . . .

Leopards Move Closer to Second Place Finish

35-26

The Jays Automotive Leopards used 25 points from Jennifer Orozco and Clarissa Magallon to down the determined but short-handed RGA Family Panthers 35-26 and move into second place in the Wildcat League after a loss by the Jaguars. The Leopards can clinch second place with a win over the Bearcats on Wednesday. A loss will put the Jaguars into second place based on a one point Jaguar advantage in head-to-head competition.

Jennifer “O’Rocket” had 15 for the winners and was the second top League scorer for the week.

After trading baskets in the first five minutes, the Leopards began a steady march toward success when Orozco snaked her way through three Panthers to put a shot up just in front of the rim and with three more scores from Magallon and three straight drives by guard Diana Catapusan, the Leopards found themselves ahead 16-6 late in the first half.

The Panthers, who had field goals only from Aubrey Knight and Mya Huber in the first 18 minutes, finally found some hope when Knight slipped unnoticed to the right power block and teammate Lindsey Moser hit her with an assist pass. Then, Moser connected for a three pointer from the right and with five points in just ten seconds, the Panthers were down only 17-11 at the half.

Lindsey Moser (left) and Ashlynn Terry

Moser started the second quarter the way she finished the first as she landed another three pointer and despite a frigid start and a ten point deficit, the Panthers were amazingly down by just one possession.

Two free throws by Jazmin Carrasco got the Panthers to within one until Orozco and Magallon combined for eight of the game’s next 10 points to put the Leopards up by seven.

Knight connected for two free throws then received a give-and-go pass from Carrasco to get the Panthers to within four; the closest they would come the rest of the way.

Aubrey Knight had 10 points and moved into the top 20 season scorers.

Orozco, Magallon, and Ashlyn Terry led the Leopards to a 10-4 finish and with Moser fouling out for the Panthers, the Leopards emerged with the win.

Orozco had 15 and Magallon 10 while Catapusan added eight for the Leopards.

Moser, the highest point-per-game scorer in the League, finished with 12 and Knight 10 for the Panthers. The Panthers were 6-for-7 from the line.

Clarissa Magallon (43) closes in on Aubrey Knight each had 10 points.

Katie, Clarissa, and Jennifer combine for 15 straight free throws . . .

Jaguars Now with Four In a Row

32-29

If you’re a fan of the bizarre, then the showdown for second place between the Bob Davis Team Jaguars and the Jay’s Automotive Leopards might have been for you.

In just the last 2:59, the teams combined for 20 free throws. Check this out: They made 15. Both are firsts in the Ventura Wildcat Basketball League. Leopard guard Jennifer “the O’Rocket” Orozco (seven in a row), Leopard forward Clarissa Magallon (four in a row), and Jaguar guard Katie Campbell (four in a row), combined for a record 15 straight free throw made – in 179 seconds.

In the end, it amounted to a 32-29 win for the Jaguars who have not lost since June 19th when they stood last in the league. Now, they are alone in second place with a 4-2 record.

In fact, in this game, the Jaguars never trailed; it just didn’t seem that way.

Campbell floated down the left lane for one score, then combined with Angie Castaneda for five points to move the Jaguars in front 7-1. The Leopards retaliated with a shot in the heart of the key by Ally Stallings-Toms and with two more

Jennifer Orozco with her 6th of seven straight free throws in 97 seconds.

scores by Orozco, the Leopards had some energy and trailed just 9-7.

Campbell had a nice three midway through the second quarter but it was the only field goal for the Jags while the Leopards steadily pressed the issue. Korie Rowell notched a free throw, Orozco rolled up another one from underneath, and shooting guard Diana Catapusan tied the game with 4:20 left in the first half.

Madeline Gremaud (gre-MOH) seemed to have the game changer when she arched a great form shot from somewhere beyond the rainbow and it dropped through to close the third quarter with the Jaguars in front 20-14.

The lead hit double-digits when power forward Kaily Wolff hit a turnaround shot in the key and a minute later, Campbell stole the ball and made a layup.

But with 7:34 yet to play, the Leopards were by no means done.

After Wolff and Catapusan traded baskets in the key, and with 4:37 showing, the scoreboards went silent for nearly 100 seconds, an omen perhaps that historical tempest was about to strike.

It started with Magallon. The talented and very cool forward saw her team down and desperately needing points. She dropped in two free throws. A minute later, Orozco got the Leopards even closer as she too nailed both of her free throws. Thirty-four seconds later, Orozco hit two more without a miss, then did the same 12 seconds later and 16 seconds after that. Yup – two-for-two-for-two-for – well you get the idea. Seven in a row.

While it brought the Leopards back to within two points, it wasn’t enough because Campbell had six points in the final 90 seconds; four of those being successive free throws.

Campbell continues to lead the Wildcat League in scoring and had 18 against the Leopards. Wolff was impressive throughout down low with agile power. She finished with eight while Gremaud had five.

Orozco had 17 for the Leopards. Magallon and Catapusan each had four.

So fierce was the battle that the teams combined for exactly 20 fouls – - – in the second half.

Both teams were in the bonus in the last three minutes which produced 36 combined free throws and is the highest number of free throws in any one game since 1998.

The Jaguars showed particularly impressive bodywork as Castaneda, Wolff, and Regina Trigueiro had position and leverage underneath.

Even so, Leopard center Korie Rowell was outstanding on the boards. The fast-rising prospect pulled down 13 rebounds despite starting only two quarters.

Korie Rowell (closest) is hard to beat near the basket.

Lions use Mace, but . . .

Pumas Win 30-25

The East Ventura Optimist Pumas survived a heavy dose of Hailie Mace to win their sixth straight game and assure no worse than a tie for the regular season Ventura Wildcat League championship. One more win and no major sportsmanship issues will give the Pumas the number one seed in the 18th Annual Courtney Davis Wildcat Classic championship tournament.

In business-like fashion, the Pumas steadliy built a lead that reached 11 points, then shriveled under the influence of Mace, then finished 30-25 over the Dole Foods Lions.

Hailie Mace brought Puma lead down to seven with this third quarter breakaway.

Brittany Rodriguez ran over the Lions for one score followed by Rebecca Negrete’s steal and layoup and in the first 48 seconds, the Pumas were up 4-0.

Mace tied it for the Lions with back-to-back scores and two steals, and teammate Anika Trianna hit a jump shot in the key and the Lions had their only lead.

Brittany Rodriguez (40) was a force in helping to build the Puma lead.

It lasted less than two minutes when shooter Nicole Aggarwal proved once again she is excellent from beyond the arch and the Pumas were excellent for the next two quarters and entered the fourth quarter up 24-13, much of it the result of drives by forward Daphne Sajor. In that span, the Lions played well; they just couldn’t get a field goal for two full quarters.

Trianna came up with some steals, free throws, and points while Amy Roman hit 14 footer and with four points by Nikki Harrasta, a steal and layup by Mace, and a perfect shot by center Jamie Tweit, the Lions trailed 28-25 but could not get any closer.

Anika Trianna drove constantly in the fourth quarter and was the Lions’ second leading scorer.

Amy Jameson scored 11 points for the victorious Pumas and Rodriguez had six.

Mace scored 13 and Trianna and Harrasta each four for the Lions.

Roberts and Moser combine for 36 points . . .

Panthers Score Season High

36-29

Sophia Roberts scored 17 points for the Oxnard Police Officers Association Bearcats and Lindsey Moser 19 for the RGA Family Panthers as the Panthers reached a season scoring high downed the Bearcats 36-29.

While Moser was a continual nuisance for the Bearcats, Roberts saved her deluge for the fourth quarter as she brought the Bearcats back from a 13 point deficit to trail by just 26-23 with 3:45 left in the game.

Sophia Roberts (l) and Jasmine Esquivel (r) were effective in getting the ‘Cats with full court pressure.

The Panthers were fast out of the blocks as Moser had two points in the first minute off of an assist pass from Tatum Behrens and two more a minute after that after an assist pass from Andrea Centeno. When Centeno dropped in two free throws, the Panthers were up 6-0 three minutes into the game.

Roberts scored for the Bearcats but Centeno hit two more free throws, Behrens and Moser six more, and the Panthers found themselves ahead 14-3 when the Bearcats just could not get the ball to bounce through the rim.

Tatum Behrens (25) had an effective game with rebounds, assists and four points.

But Ashley LeCroy changed that for the ‘Cats as she had a putback midway through the second quarter that unleashed the Bearcats’ scoring. Makayla Flinn closed out the half with an 18 footer off the right side and then opened the third quarter for the Bearcats with a shot from almost the same place. Roberts added six straight points and suddenly, the ‘Cats were back in the hunt, trailing just 20-15 with 9:39 still on the clock.

This Ashley LeCroy putback in the second quarter got the Bearcats scoring again.

Moser and Roberts duked it out before the Bearcats called a timeout, then unleashed Roberts to drive the lane and come up with several scores and a three-point ‘Cat deficit.

Aubrey Knight hit for one basket and a free throw before Centeno and Moser added five and the Panthers were well in front, 32-23, with 1:48 remaining.

Then in the space of just 20 seconds, the Bearcats came up with five points. Flinn cranked up a trey, the Bearcat press a steal, and Jasmine Esquivel a driving score and it was 32-28 with 1:23 left.

Knight sailed an assist pass to Mya Huber for a critical score and after a free throw by Roberts, Behrens closed the Panthers win with a score from 13 feet out on the left side.

Moser’s 19 led all scoreres for the weekend.

Half of the games points were scored in just the fourth quarter.

Bern factor . . .

Leopards, But Barely

30-27

With Makayla Flinn, one of the League’s top scorers, hampered by illness, the message was clear to the Oxnard Police Officers Association Bearcats: Someone needed to step up and fill Flinn’s void. The result was evidence once again what players can do when they are given opportunity and encouragement.

Camille Bern suddenly stepped into the role of floor leader for the Bearcats. She led the offense, led the team in scoring, and ignited a Bearcats team to a near-upset of the Jay’s Automotive Leopards before falling 30-27.

Camille Bern took over leadership of the Bearcats and showed her years of experience and training.

Bern was as confident as she is skilled and she proved her years of training and skill as she dropped in 1o points and dished six assists. It was her shot that got the Bearcats to within three points with just six seconds left setting up an intentional foul by Savannah Vizzo to stop the clock; a missed free throw that was rebounded by the Bearcats; a three-quarter court pass downcourt; and a wild three-point shot by Vizzo that would have sent the game into overtime.

The game was that close.

Some would say even closer after learning there were four ties and seven lead changes in just the first half.

Leopards lefty Clarissa Magallon was impossible for the Bearcats as she popped from the outside and drove with determination and force on her way to 10 points. But check this out: Miss Magallon scored all ten of those — in a row — in less than eight minutes! It might be that when Miss Magallon decides to go to the basket, just wish her well, cuz it doesn’t seem that stopping her is much of an option.

Despite Magallon’s heroics through the third quarter, the Leopards could not get more than a 21-17 lead entering the final ten minutes. At that point, there was one way to stop Magallon, at least temporarily: She was on the bench.

Clarissa Magallon (white) dominated with her drives while Sophia Roberts (red) came through in the late-game clutch for the Bearcats.

Jennifer Orozco led the Leopards late in the game as the two-time Wildcat All Star had two steals, two free throws, and two points in just 15 seconds to put the Leopards up 30-23 with only 1:04 to play. It seemed like a safe lead and a sure win.

But Sophia Roberts dropped in two free throws, the Bearcats came up with the ball again and just seconds later, got the ball to Bern, whose score set up the exciting final six seconds.

Athena Giron got the Bearcats first quarter off on the right foot when she notched a three-pointer from the left back court and a minute later, Roberts scored and the Bearcats were up 5-0.

Korie Rowell tied the score four minutes later but Bern gave the Bearcats another three-pointer and despite another score by Rowell, the first quarter ended with the ‘Cats up 8-7.

Korie Rowell (white) had four points in 90 seconds to give the Leopards a much-needed first quarter lift.

The teams traded leads and tied scores before Orozco zinged an assist pass to Magallon who put the Leopards in front for good at the 7:43 mark of the third quarter.

Bern’s 10 points was supported by Vizzo’s six.

In addition to Magallon’s ten points, Orozco had nine and shooting guard Diana Catapusan seven.

Portrait of a shooter: Dianna Catapusan is one of the best — one player you cannot leave open.

Athena Giron hit a three-pointer just minutes into the game to put the ‘Cats up early.
Savannah Vizzo is hard to stop on drives to the basket.

Jameson starts fast . . .

Pumas Still Unbeaten

25-18

Amy Jameson slapped away the first pass of the game and streaked to the other end where she was fouled and scored. Then, she slapped away the second pass and drove to a layup as the E Ventura Optimist Pumas took an early lead and downed the talented Dole Foods Lions 25-18 to stay on top of the Wildcat League with a perfect 5-0 record.

Amy Jameson hit this three-pointer in the second half, but it was her steals and scoring in the first two minutes that cranked up the Pumas energy. Amy is last year’s Top Cat award winner: The highest-rated player among all categories.

It wasn’t a difference of skill but rather of endurance. In short: The Pumas just wore down the short-handed Lions who played much of the fourth quarter with no substitutes. Compounding the Lions fourth quarter problems was that two players on the bench were starters, center Jamie Tweit and outstanding guard Nikki Harrasta, both of whom fouled out.

Meanwhile, the Pumas were basking in the comfort of a 10 point lead after Crystal Altman hit a 12 footer to start the fourth quarter.

Crystal Altman hit a 12 footer to give the Pumas their biggest lead, 23-13.

The Lions closed slightly when the Pumas’ guns went silent for nine minutes, but the Lions could only muster three points in the same span when athletic guard Hailie Mace made a free throw and Alejandra Cano took a long pass from Anika Trianna, twisted in the key and dropped the ball over the from the front of the rim.

Hailie Mace chipped away at the Pumas’ lead with athletic drives, many of them resulting in free throws.

Alejandra Cano needed great balance to get turned in time to put in this shot and get the margin down to 23-16. Her score came as a result of a great pass by Anika Trianna.

Despite Jameson’s early breakaways, the Pumas found themselves behind in the first quarter after Tweit hit from the right lane for the Lions and Trianna from near the three-point arch. The Pumas regained the lead on a basket by Brittany Rodriguez who was opening space at the low post all game long.

Brittany Rodriguez (“B-Rod” according to teammates) did all of the bodywork at the low post to have a huge game.

After trading scores through much of the second quarter, the Pumas finally got the lead once and for all when Nicole Aggarwal was left alone 16 feet out on the right lane with 4:23 left in the half. Losing track of Aggarwal is a dangerous proposition because she is one of the deadliest shooters of this summer. Yet in the second half, Aggarwal was alone on the perimeter again and this time, she dropped in a three pointer to push the Puma lead to 21-13.

Nicole Aggarwal (12) scored on this shot to return the lead back to the Pumas.

There was a reason why the Lions were in foul trouble.

Daphne Sajor.

The strong, driving forward was constantly in the key causing trouble as the Lions used a collapsed zone but could not keep the Pumas away from the basket. Sajor went in anyway and she was pure havoc for Lions’ defenders.

The Lions had a hard time keeping Daphne Sajor (#44) out of the key.

Trianna led the Lions with six points while Harrasta added four.

Jameson had eight for the Pumas while Aggarwal finished with five. The Pumas were 1-for-11 from the free throw line.

JagGuards combine for 22 . . .

Jags With Third Straight Win

34-17

Madeline Gremaud and Katie Campbell combined for 22 points and the Bob Davis Team Jaguars soared into third place in the Wildcat League after a 34-17 win over the RGA Family Panthers.

It took Gremaud all of 25 seconds to announce her arrival when she pumped up a three-pointer from the left back court and dropped it through. A minute later, Campbell hit from inside the key, Angie Castenada notched a free throw and Gremaud scored again to move the Jags into an 8-0 lead.

Nice start, eh? But, if you know the Jaguars, they are nothing if not dynamic and just as easily as the scores came in the first seven minutes, they stopped altogether for the next ten.

That unexpected lapse was enough for the Panthers to reel off 10 points of their own and take the lead. It started with Andrea Centeno finishing a strong drive through three defenders with a layup and was followed by two scores for point guard Jazmin Carrasco, a steal and nicely-controlled layoup by Aubrey Knight, and two free throws by Mya Huber.

Mya Huber may be the fastest growing player in the 2010 Wildcats. Her hustle and hard work make her a prospect.

Then, the Jaguars got the lift they needed. Post player Lexi Woodward tied it 10-10 at the half and after the break, the Jaguars went to work with scoring from Castenada, Campbell, Regina Trigueiro , and Hannah Harrader. When the dust settled, the Jags were up 19-11. Campbell hit the last of the scores by dribbling to an on-ball rub-off screen and when the defender went behind the screen, Campbell pulled up and hit a three-pointer.

Kaily Wolff plays well underneath and is a smart player.

With Libby Litten rebounding and Centeno scoring, the Panthers closed the margin to just five points in the fourth quarter before Gremaud and Campbell combined for eight points and Gremaud launched an assist pass to Kaily Wolf to put the Jags out of danger. It was a 10-0 splurge that took all of four minutes.

Libby Litten had several rebounds and two steals in a third quarter comeback effort for the Panthers.

Brianna Eubanks got to the basket for two points and was fouled but it was the last of the firepower for the Panthers despite two timeouts late in the game to restore order and install full court pressure.

Brianna Eubanks is a threat to score double-digits every time out.

The Jaguars responded with Campbell’s ball-handling and two final baskets by Castenada and Gremaud.

Campbell and Gremaud each had 11 for the Jags and Castenada five. Campbell remains the top scorer in the Wildcat League.

Centeno had seven and Carrasco four for the Panthers. Both played for the Wildcats’ travel team Velocity 101, as did Litten and Knight of the Panthers and Woodward of the Jaguars.

Both teams shot well from the line, combining for 7 out of 12 free throws.

Gremaud changes momentum . . .

Jaguars Make it Two in a Row

35-30

The Bob Davis Team Jaguars scored in surges for the fourth straight game and emerged with a 35-30 win over the Oxnard Police Officers Association Bearcats. It was the second consecutive win for the Jaguars after starting the season 0-2.

Katie Campbell led the winners with 14 points but it was a three-point shot by Madeline Gremaud from the right wing at the start of the fourth quarter that turned the fortunes for the Jags. Until then, the Bearcats had sprung from a 13 point deficit at halftime to close the margin to just 24-23 on Makayla Flinn’s three-pointer from the far right corner. It was Flinn’s third three pointer of the game as she also finished the game with 14 points. In just 6 1/2 minutes of the third quarter, the Bearcats rolled up the Jaguars 9-0 and seemed primed for a fourth quarter run to the finish.

The Bearcats started the game with a 4-0 lead behind the stellar play of guard Jasmine Esquivel who had two steals and two rebounds in the first four minutes and then repeated those numbers in the Bearcats successful third quarter. Esquivel was all over the court coming up with the ball and, oh yes, she still found time to drop in a put-back in the center of the key.

Jasmine Esquivel had one of the most complete games played so far this Summer.

So tenacious was the Bearcats’ defense that the Jaguars – the top scoring team in the Wildcats – did not get on the scoreboard until less than two minutes remained in the first quarter.

Then, the Jaguars got a spark.

Hannah Harrader entered the game and in a matter of seconds, she tied the game with a soft shot from the right block followed moments later by a putback of a missed shot and a minute later, a nice arching set shot from the left wing. Mix in a shot by Kaily Wolff and a dash of Campbell’s and the Jags were suddenly in front 16-4 after scoring 14 points in six minutes. It was the third time this season the Jaguars have notched 18 points in a single quarter.

Of course, the green-n-gold Jag girls are not out to make life easy for coach Jim Pando. Like a fighter taking a ninth-round breather, the Jags could muster only two scores in the third quarter while the Bearcats were clawing their way back to within a single point.

Gremaud’s cool trey to start the fourth quarter was the start of another Jaguar blast fueled by field goals from Wolff, Campbell, and Angie Casteneda who led the Jaguars with 9 rebounds.

Angie Cateneda with one of her nine rebounds for the Jaguars.

As important as Casteneda’s rebounding was to the Jaguars, so was the rebounding of Savannah Vizzo for the Bearcats. The power forward went hard to the boards to come up with eight rebounds.

Despite falling behind once again by 10 points, the Bearcats proved they don’t give up. Center Sophia Roberts took an assist pass from Camille Bern for one score, then twisted through the key for another while Flinn dropped in her fourth three-pointer to finish the game. Flinn is now the League’s third leading scorer.

Roberts scored 12 for the Bearcats including a nifty off balance drive through the key that lifted the Bearcats in the third quarter.

Part of the difference for the Jags this season has been the number of players who score. Besides Campbell with 14 and Harrader with eight, the Jaguars got a combined 13 points from Gremaud, Wolff, and Casteneda.

The Jaguars now stand in third place in the Wildcat League.

Eight Pumas score . . .

Pumas Win Battle of Unbeatens

27-17

In a battle of top-ranked teams, the East Ventura Optimist Pumas ascended from a very close game to down the Jays Automotive Leopards 27-17 and take sole possession of first place in the Wildcat League.

Despite an impressive 7-0 start, the Pumas were only up by two possessions with just 8 1/2 minutes to go. At that point, the Pumas clamped down on the defensive end to hold the Leopards scoreless while the game’s leading scorer Rebecca Negrette combined with Crystal Altman for the games final six points.

Rebecca Negrette (ball) ran the point and led the team in scoring and steals.

After a slow start and a fast timeout by coach Jayson Root, the Leopards needed less than three minutes to erase all of the Pumas’ first quarter heroics. Elyssa Root got things started with a three pointer from backcourt followed by a two-pointer from nearly the same spot. When Jennifer Orozco drove the right lane, it appeared the first ten minutes would end 7-7. However, forward Daphne Sajor stepped to the free throw line and hit the front-end of a one-and-one to give the Pumas a lead they would not relinquish.

When Altman and Sajor combined for two more scores, it looked like the Pumas might pull away but Diana Catapusan calmly squared up on the left wing and launched a perfect two-pointer while Orozco drove the lane again to close out the half with the Leopards down 14-11.

Amy Jameson (l) and Alyssa Mendez were sparkplugs in the fourth quarter.

Orozco stole the ball early in the second half and hit forward Madison Stevenson streaking down the left side to get the margin down to a single point. Alyssa Mendez and Amy Jameson each scored for the Pumas while Clarissa Magallon hit for the Bearcats and then, as it is said, a big thing came from a small package.

Nicole Aggarwal was left unguarded in the left backcourt and she took her time to square up and with nine minutes left, she hit nothing but net from the three-point line to give the Pumas a six-point span and with the Pumas’ defensive vice the rest of the way, the Pumas emerged and remain undefeated.

This three-pointer and five points in 64 seconds by Elyssa Root got the Leopards going.

In addition to holding the Leopards scoreless in the final eight minutes, the Pumas held the advantage of eight players hitting the scoreboard. Negrette led the way with seven while Altman and Brittany Rodriguez had four each. Rodriguez was a problem for the Leopards with power drives from the high post and powerful putbacks from the blocks.

Orozco had six and Root five for the Leopards.

Crushing defense . . .

Lions Move into Third Place

27-13

Relying on their best defensive showing of the year, the Dole Foods Lions held the RGA Family Panthers to just four field goals on their way to a 27-13 win and third place in the Wildcat League.

Nikki Harrasta had 11 steals, 11 rebounds, and 12 points to lift the Lions to a defensive result that was 20 points better than the team has averaged.

Nikki Harrasta (#23) had a triple-double in leading the Lions..

But Harrasta wasn’t the only thief in the den of Lions.

Anika Trianna started the larceny 23 seconds into the game and finished it with a layup at the other end. Harrasta and Hailie Mace each shredded the net and with the game one minute and four seconds old, the Lions were already up 6-0. With a Mace steal and assist pass to Harrasta, the Lions closed the quarter 8-0.

But not so fast.

The Panthers have a legacy of winning in the Wildcat League and, in fact, were in the championship game a year ago. Panthers don’t just slink away to ignominy. Instead, they call timeouts and snarl their way back.

Center Brianna Eubanks took a pass at the high post and drove for one score followed by another from forward Andrea Centeno and after the halftime break, Centeno hit both ends of a one-and-one free throw before pulling up to score from just off of the left elbow and – well yeah – the Panthers were down by just two points.

Andrea Centeno (#31) led the Panthers in scoring and is the most physical Wildcat.

Then, Harrasta re-entered the game for the Lions. Eighteen seconds later, she stole the ball – again – and drove to the basket – again – and was fouled – again. Two minutes later, she repeated those steps except this time, she bowled up an underhanded floater that barely touched anything as it dropped through. Alejandra Cano found a missed shot on the right block and put it in before Harrasta got her sticky hands on another Panthers’ pass, ripped it off, and rambled for yet another score.

Harrasta had six steals and six points in less than four minutes of the third quarter and the Lions were up 18-8.

Centeno had a few drives of her own and went to the free throw line. Then, a three-pointer by Jasmin Carrasco raised the hopes – and the hollers – of the Panthers’ fans as the League’s youngest player struck from the top of the key. Unfortunately, it was the last field goal of the game for the Panthers and there was still five minutes to play.

Mace kept things going for the Lions as she netted five points in the waning minutes and Trianna added four to keep the Lions safely in front.

Alejandra Cano (#41) was a key part of the Lions’ third-quarter surge with rebounds, a free throw, and a basket.

Aubrey Knight was a knight-mare for the Lions as the Panther guard stepped in front of a half-dozen passes and streaked the other way to pressure the Lions’ defense. Knight had the final say for the Panthers as she hit two free throws just before the buzzer.

Just one of Aubrey Knight’s opportunistic interceptions in the fourth quarter.

The Lions were just 1-for-12 from the free throw line.

Centeno led the Panthers with six points.

The Panthers are the youngest team in the Wildcat League, often courting a just-graduated lineup of four fifth graders and one fourth grader.

Moser’s 19 best in League this year . . .

Leopards Stay Unbeaten 31-23

Despite 19 points from the RGA Family Panthers’ Lindsey Moser, the Jay’s Automotive Leopards took the lead with 2:27 left in the third quarter on a left-handed layup by Clarissa Magallon and a stubborn defense that gave up just one field goal in the final 16 minutes and posted a 31-23 win to stay undefeated in the Wildcat League.

Clarissa Magallon (#43) on her familiar left-hand breakaway and finish. Clarissa had 16 points.

But Moser made things tough for the Leopards as she ran off all of the Panthers’ first 18 points before the Leopards could get her under control.

With nine lead changes in the first half, the Panthers rallied for eight straight points and a modest four point lead that seemed filled with omen. The exorcist for that omen came in the form of exciting newcomer Allyson Stallings-Toms who dropped in an eight-footer from the right short corner and the Leopards eventually closed out the first half up by two.

Allyson Stallings-Toms is smart, fast, skilled and one of the younger players.

Brianna Eubanks worked hard for rebounds and nice shots underneath. Korie Rowell (right/white) was a strong force underneath with good position for rebounds.

The Panthers sprung into the second half as forward Andrea Centeno pulled down one of her nine rebounds and soared down the right sideline and hit Moser with a timely assist pass. Two minutes later, Centeno pulled up at the free throw line with a score to give the Panthers their last lead with 6:13 to go in the third quarter.

Magallon struck back with a shot from the left short corner before she pulled down a rebound and finished on the left side to finally put the Leopards in front for the game. However, the Leopards were never safe as evidenced by their meager four point lead with just 90 seconds to play. In fact, the biggest lead the Leopard enjoyed was the final eight point margin.

If the first half belonged to Moser, the second half was just as much under the influence of Magallon as the talented strong forward tallied 14 of the Leopards final 17 points.

Besides sharing the same jersey number (43) both Magallon and Moser are now tied for second place in Wildcat season scoring with identical 10.7 ppg averages.

Two-time all star Jennifer Orozco had eight points in support of the winners.

The Leopards face the Pumas in a battle of undefeated league leaders on July 7th.

Mya Huber comes from a strong line of basketball players and in the past six months, her hard work has paid off in steals, strong defense, and opportunistic shots. Maddisyn Weishaar (#1 white) has been very aggressive and effective in going after the ball, making her a valuable part of the Leopard’s undefeated season.

Andrea Centeno (blue left) and Mya Huber work against the defense of Elissa Root. (More photos are in the Photo Gallery.)

Two players combine for 25 points . . .

Jaguars Close with 18-2 Frenzy

Win 46-31

Two players just out of the sixth grade combined for 35 points as rangey forward Leah Kopp had 18 for her Bob Davis Team Jaguars and effervescent guard Katie Byrne powered her way to 17. Kopp has taken over the points-per-game scoring lead in the Wildcats while Byrne vaulted up to seventh.

Leah Kopp left and Katie Byrne right staged one solid hour of hot gunslinging.

It all added up to an 18-2 fourth quarter for the Jaguars who won their first game of the season, an impressive 46-31 romp over the Dole Foods Lions who were hampered by the absences of four starters.

Despite the advantage of a full roster, the Jaguars just could not put away the feisty Lions who were still loitering within five points as the game’s last six minutes were counting down.

The explosive Jaguar fourth quarter began with Kayla Togneri who only needed 69 seconds to start the late-game rush. Angie Castaneda followed from underneath and from there, it was a string of driving Kopp layups mixed with some floaters by Katie Campbell and the Jaguars pulled away.

Kopp, Campbell, and Castaneda are all among the top 12 scorers in the Wildcats.

Kayla Togneri

If the Lions were few in number, they weren’t low on determination as the maroon marauders went to Byrne and Amy Roman to forge a 4-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Two three pointers by Lilliana Preciado kept the Lions close through the first half while Alejandra Cano pulled down some key rebounds and Anika Trianna gave the Jaguars fits with her persistent power-drives into the key.

Lilliana Preciado (center) had two three-pointers for the Lions. Lilliana, Angie Castaneda (left) and Katie Campbell (right) are all top-20 scorers.

Campbell’s 12 points puts her fourth in League scoring and gives the Jaguars two of the top four Wildcat scorers.

In addition to getting 30 points from Kopp and Campbell, the Jaguars had a total of seven players score, making it the only team to place at least six players on the scoreboard in every game this season.

Alijandra Cano (ball) is coming on as a strong presence around the key. She had several rebounds and steals. (More photos are in the Photo Gallery.)

Bearcats stay close most of the way . . .

Pumas Still Top-Ranked after Furious Finish

28-13

It was a battle of the League’s top-ranked vs the League’s last-ranked, but for most of the game, an outsider would not have known which was which as the Police Officers Association of Oxnard Bearcats were down just 14-11 to the E Ventura Optimists Pumas with seven minutes left in the game.

Until then, the battle underneath was torrid as the Bearcats Savannah Vizzo and Sophia Roberts jammed all of the driving lanes, slapped down four shots and spent as much time diving on the floor for loose balls as did guard Makayla Flinn. So effective was the power game for the Bearcats that with two minutes left in the third, the undefeated Pumas had just two field goals and the Bearcats had a three point lead.

Szvannah Vizzo goes up against the defense of Kim Cagle.

Then, disaster struck.

Roberts fouled out. The gap left in the middle gave Pumas’ center Brittany Rodriguez the room she needed to score all of her points in the second half and with back-to-back scores from Rebecca Negrete and more scoring from Kim Cagle, Daphne Sajor, and Amy Jameson, the Pumas walked away with the end-game. Rodriguez led seven players into scoring with eight points.

Rebecca Negrete (left/aqua) was fouled on this shot and went to the line with the undefeated Pumas down 11-10.

Roberts led the Bearcats with six.

The Pumas’ next game is July 7th against the undefeated Jay’s Automotive Leopards.

Athena Giron (10) ran the point much of the time and had some nice three point attempts, all of them executed with excellent form that she has worked hard to attain.

Sophia Roberts (52) was a critical element for the Bearcats on both ends of the court.

Wednesday night games in July . . .

There are some games scheduled for some Wednesday nights in July. Be sure to check your team’s schedule.

Also, we may need some help at the scorer’s table for Wednesday night games. The job is simple, albeit unpaid. Having support at the scorer’s table makes it possible to get more photos onto this webapage.

Veronica Zavala (white) splits defenders Lauren Petit (left) and Tianna Cohen on her way to the basket in 2006 Wildcat action. Veronica and Lauren are both players at Ventura High School. Tianna is one of the area’s most talented young actresses and the only two-time Top Cat award winner in the Wildcats. (Picture was purposely distorted for a special page in 2007.)

Veronica’s little sister Jazmin (#1 above) is the youngest player in this year’s Wildcats and not only one of the most skilled for her age, but she was the 2009 State of California free throw finalist for nine year olds.

Roberts gets 12 for Bearcats . . .

Panthers Move Up

32-30

Savannah Vizzo (44) has become an outstanding high school prospect at the power forward position.

The RGA Family Panthers posted an 8-0 second quarter to vault into a 17-6 halftime lead on their way to a 32-30 win over the Police Officers Association Bearcats.

The Panthers took the lead with three-and-a-half minutes gone in the first quarter when 10 year old Jazmin Carrasco, the league’s youngest player, spotted up at the top of the key and calmly arched a three-pointer. Andrea Centeno followed that with two shots from the left wing to end the first quarter with the Panthers up by three.

Aubrey Knight and Laina Feath pushed the lead up to 11 when Knight stole two passes and finished layups, then both Knight and Feath scored from the right elbow.

The game was far from over. The Bearcats are a streaky kinda’ team and with scoring from Savannah Vizzo and Makayla Flynn, the ‘cats rampaged for eight straight points to close to within 17-14.

Laina Feath (far right/blue) had two important scores from the right side.

That nice bit of insurrection came to a temporary halt when Carrasco found herself unguarded again in the right backcourt and she stung the ‘cats for another three-pointer. Centeno and Libby Litten backed their talented point guard with scores of their own and the Panthers had things well in hand once again, leading 24-18 after three.

Feath and Lindsey Moser rebuilt the Panthers’ lead to 13 points and with less than five minutes to play, it seemed the Bearcats’ loss was certain.

Yet with 42 seconds left in the game, the Bearcats had blasted their way to a 12-0 streak and trailed just 31-30 and with full court pressure, it seemed the Bearcats might finish an incredible comeback.

But, Centeno came up with the ball and a free throw with 2.9 seconds remaining and a halfcourt shot by Flynn at the buzzer was blocked.

Besides playing tough matchup defense, the victorious Panthers had much better defensive positioning this week and despite leading the league in fouls for the weekend (21), their aggressiveness payed off with 11 steals.

Moser and Centeno led the Panthers with seven points each while Knight and Carrasco had six. Knight had four steals in just the second quarter.

Roberts powered here way to 12 points, highest in the League for the weekend, and moved up to fourth in League scoring. Vizzo added nine and Flynn seven. The ‘Cats were an impressive 11-for-17 from the line.

Sophia Roberts (#52) led all Wildcats in scoring for the weekend.

More photos in the Gallery. Quality should be better next week when main camera is operational.

It isn’t often we would point to a winless team and alert fans that it is a contender for the title game in August, but that is how the Bearcats appear in the earlygoing.

Keep in mind those two streaks – eight points and 12 points. Historically, teams that can post one such streak in a game is a team to watch, but the ‘cats did it twice. Teams capable of those kinds of performances are seldom out of any game and they show up well inthe late rounds of the playoffs. Opposing coaches need to be aware that the Bearcats exploded for 24 points in just the last 1 1/2 quarters! In that time, Savannah Vizzo had nine, Makayla Flynn seven, and Sophia Roberts six

Also, the ‘Cats have lost twice but only by single possessions.

And perhaps most importantly, they have the right personnel to go all the way in the championship tournament. They have the league’s second leading scorer, perhaps the toughest inside player in Roberts, outside shooting, several effective ball-handling guards, and Vizzo who is the most powerful non-club player in the area.

Pumas Stay on Top

33-29

Rebecca Negrete scored 10 points to lead the East Ventura Optimist Pumas to a 33-29 win over the Bob Davis Jaguars to retain first place in the Wildcat League.

Negrette scored eight of her points in the opening quarter but with the Jaguars rallying behind scoring from Angie Castaneda, Katie Campbell, Kaily Wolff, and Madeline Gremaud, the Jaguars rang up the highest one-quarter total of any team so far in 2010 and the Jags led 15-10 after one.

Rebecca Negrete (with ball) had a great game with 10 points.

Daphne Sajor responded for the Pumas as she netted seven points, including the go-ahead score with 5:56 left in the half.

The Pumas steadily built their lead to 10 points with 4:06 to play before the Jaguars got it down to four on a Castaneda basket with less than a minute to play. A late score by the League’s leading scorer Amy Jameson preserved the Pumas’ win.

The teams combined to put 12 players on the scorecard; eight of them with more than one field goal as teams continue to show advanced play for this early in the season.

Behind Negrete’s 10, the Pumas had seven points from Sajor and six each from Jameson and Nicole Aggarwal.

The Jaguars had nine each from Cateneda and Campbell and four from guard Madeline Gremaud. Castaneda is now a top-10 scorer.

The Jaguars posted a season-best 12-for-17 from the free throw line.

Strong second half propels Leopards . . .

Leopards Wire-to-Wire

33-21

Elissa Root announced early what to expect from the undefeated Jay’s Automotive Leopards. With less than a minute played, the seventh grade guard received a pass off of an inbounds play and popped a nice three-pointer from the left side. The Leopards had the lead and never relinquished it as they posted a 33-21 win over the Dole Foods Lions.

Root and teammate Clarissa Magallon led all scorers with nine points while Jamie Tweit and Anika Trianna both had six for the Lions.

The Lions worked their way back to within three points midway through the second quarter behind five rebounds from Katie Byrne and powerful drives and exceptional play from Trianna. However, a six-minute scoring lapse in the third quarter propped the Leopards up to a ten point lead.

Tweit finished the third quarter with two strong scores on the left block for the Lions but the Leopards responded with a three-pointer by Magallon and back-to-back bank shots from the left side by Diana Catapusan to keep the Lions at bay.

Jamie Tweit started a Lions’ rally in the second half with strong rebounding and scoring.

Flinn hits four threes but . . .

Lions in the Final Minute 28-27

Second Half Streak: 16-5

June 12, 2010

Veteran Makayla Flinn picked up in 2010 exactly where she left off in last Summer’s televised championship game: Nailing three-pointers like they were wall-hangers. The seventh grade guard only needed 62 seconds to land her first bomb and 69 seconds to drop in two more, propelling her Oxnard Police Officers Association Bearcats to a blistering 15-0 first quarter lead over the Dole Foods Lions.

A short time later, Athena Giron popped in her own three from the left wing and Flinn another in the fourth quarter to give the Bearcats a whopping five for the game.

It was as good a start as anyone could ask . . .but it was temporary.

With a 16-5 late-game run sparked by guard Hailie Mace, the Lions prevailed in one of the most exciting comebacks in Wildcats history. How exciting? Well, the Lions never, at any time, led the game until they scored the last basket to produce a 28-27 final.

Hailie Mace took over the last four minutes netting six points, four steals, and this athletic, and somewhat incredible, game-winning shot to give the Lions their only lead of the game, on the last basket of the game. More pictures in the Photo Gallery.

The Lions started the second quarter with baskets by Lilianna Preciado and Amy Roman, and finished with three free throws from Anika Trianna and by halftime, it was clear the Lions had momentum.

Camille Bern opened the second half for the Bearcats with a soft and controlled shot from the right short corner which was matched by the Lions’ Katie Byrne. Savannah Vizzo powered her way for the Bearcats just before the Lions went on a 6-0 spree with scoring from Byrne, Mace, and center Hailey Yates to bring the Lions to within 24-18.

Vizzo ended the third quarter with a score and some breathing room for the Bearcats but a 10-3 finish by the Lions was the difference as Mace stole the ball off the press to produce the game’s final six points. Mace also made her way to the free throw line twice in the final 1:37. Her amazing shot down the right lane, over the shoulder, and off of the backboard was enough to rattle some windows from fan excitement.

Flinn led all scorers with 12 points and stands second among League scorers after the first week. Vizzo added six points.

Mace and Preciado led the Lions in scoring.

The Bearcats went to the free throw line 18 times and made six. The Lions had two free throw attempts.

Leopards Come From Behind

22-20

June 12, 2010

Katie Campbell started fast, but it was the power of Clarissa Magallon at the end that lifted the Jay’s Automotive Leopards to a come-from-behind victory over the Bob Davis Team Jaguars, 22-20.

Clarissa Magallon (43) was all power near the basket late in the game. Clarissa’s determination completed the Leopards’ comeback. More photos are in the Photo Gallery.

Campbell, one of the most-skilled guards in her age group, stole the ball twice and dropped in floating left-handers along the left lane, then grabbed a missed shot and put it back with 19 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to give her Jaguars an 8-4 lead.

Guards don’t get much better than Katie Campbell. She’s a nice kid, but she’ll pick your pocket and turn it into “money” at the other end if you give her the chance.

Ashlynn Terry kept the Leopards in the game as she tied the score with two baskets near the end of the first half. Leah Kopp calmly hit two free throws to finish the half with the Jaguars up 10-8.

Once again, the Jaguars started the half quickly as Hannah Harader scored from 12 feet out just 32 seconds into the second half and after surviving a score by Elissa Root and a free throw by Magallon, the Jags took off for three straight scores from Kopp, Kaily Wolff, and Madeline Gremaud. The green-n-gold was up 18-11.

With Magallon and Jennifer Orozco working in tandem, the Leopards began their charge to the finish as they combined for nine points and Terry kicked in another two and with just 28 seconds remaining Magallon powered up for a put-back and the Leopards had their one and only lead, 22-20. The Leopards won the fourth quarter 11-2.

Campbell led the Jaguars with eight points while Magallon had seven and Terry six for the winning Leopards.

The teams combined for just 6-for-20 from the free throw line.

The Jaguars had a League-best six out of nine players score.

Pumas Out of the Blocks Fast – again

32-12

June 12, 2010

In a rematch of last year’s championship game, the East Ventura Optimist Pumas came out on top once again over the RGA Family Panthers, this time by a score of 32-12.

The Pumas’ Amy Jameson won the 2009 Top Cat Award as the League’s highest performer in categories that record commitment, performance, and sportsmanship. With 15 points in her opener on Saturday, the skilled forward now leads the Ventura Wildcat Summer League in scoring.

Kim Cagle is in her third year of Wildcats and her growth as a player has been evident each year. She was second in team scoring for the Pumas and she starts the season as the Wildcats’ #6 scorer.

The defending champion Pumas reeled off 11 straight points before Libby Litten hit the front end of a one-and-one supplemented later in the half by a nice 16 footer by point guard Jazmin Carrasco for the Panthers.

The Pumas reached their biggest lead on a basket by Kim Cagle early in the fourth quarter. However, it was the only Pumas score in the final eight minutes while the Panthers finally got untracked and finished with six scores in the final four minutes, most of them free throws.

For the winners, fifth-grader Brooklyn Kinsler had eight points and four steals while Cagle scored seven for the game.

Brooklyn Kinsler (white) is the leading scorer in her age group and one of the most effective players overall.

Lindsey Moser led the Panthers with six points.

The Panthers shot 22 free throws.

Coach John Collet of the Panthers encouraged his very young players to keep their chins up, work hard, believe in what they do, and stick together, encouraging them that that is how teams become successful.
