Wildcat Champion Award

Buena High School

Over the years, we have given thousands of awards.  This is only the 10th time we have given the Wildcat Champion award.  It is also the first time we have given the award to an organization rather than an individual and it is well-deserved for Buena High School girls basketball program for their 20 years of unwavering commitment to the Wildcats made manifest by twenty years of their coaches and players helping us at our annual skills clinic and also with assisting league operations during Summer league games.  Thank you so much coach David Guenther, coach Joe Vaughan, and all of the girls who have been with us over the past 20 years.

Lupita’s 10 points makes 2012 the  . . .

Year of the Jaguar

26-14

.

The Bob Davis Team Jaguars left off right where they picked up.

.

While that might sound a little backward, it explains much of how the season progressed for the Jags.  After starting the season atop the Ventura Wildcat League standings, the Jaguars fell on some hard times, then recovered in time to go undefeated through the 20th Annual Courtney Davis Memorial Wildcat Classic, finishing it with a resounding 26-14 win over the Ventura Trophy Leopards to claim the 2012 tournament championship.

.

With scores from Mya Huber, Allyson Liu, and Lupita Rocha, and two great assists by Vanessa Smart, the Jags broke away from a close game to take control early in the third quarter.

.

The Leopards got on the board first when Mariah Davis received an assist pass from Rachel Jamroz and scored from the left side.  The lead lasted for half of the first quarter until Rocha connected on one assist to Liu and another to Smart and the Jaguars never trailed again.

Olivia Anderson had six rebounds in just the first half.

.

It appeared the Leopards would close the gap when the Jaguars opted for a match-up defense that found 5-foot-9 Leopard guard Kayla Togneri getting into the key against Rocha who is somewhere south of five-feet, but even with the height differential and six first-half rebounds by forward Olivia Anderson, the Leopards couldn’t capitalize enough to close the gap and the Jaguars returned to zone.

Rachel Jamroz (11) drives while Lupita Rocha closes the lane.

.

Coach Jim Pando of the Jaguars turned to Huber to start the second half and the power forward drove her way to the free throw line five times in seven minutes.

Mya Huber went 4-for-4 free throws to start the Jaguars third-quarter thrust.

There are more than 200 pictures of this game in the Photo Gallery

.

The Leopards bit into the Jaguars’ lead midway through the third when Shelby Collet drove the left lane and Anderson  took an inbound pass from Jamroz in the key, but Rocha responded with two scores and the teams traded points the rest of the way to seal the first-ever title for the Jaguars.

.

Kayla Togneri led all rebounders and also led the Leopards in scoring along with Mariah Davis (right)

Rocha led all scorers with 10 points and had four assists while Liu had six points and eight rebounds.  Erica Dorman was among the game’s leading rebounders.

.

Togneri and Davis led the Leopards in scoring.  Togneri led all rebounders with nine and Anderson finished with seven.

.

The Wildcats were honored to have Mr. Tom West (Time-Warner) as play-by-play announcer, CAPS television for rebroadcasting (times to be determined) and DVDs, and Rich Romine of the Ventura County Star newspaper with his photographer; the feature to be published on Thursday, August 16, 2012.  Also in attendance were Coach David Guenther, head basketball coach for Buena High School girls, Coach Craig Williams, head basketball coach for Buena boys, and Howard Davis, athletic director for Moorpark College.

.

Several awards were presented prior to the game which included the 2012 All Wildcat team, Coach of the Year Marci Worthy (Panthers), scoring champion Michelle-Rae Yutuc (Bearcats), Ultimate Spirit of the Wildcats Claire Hansen (Bearcats), Top Cat award winner Karina Fuentes (Panthers), and a rarely-given Wildcat Champion Award to Buena High School in appreciation of 20 years of support for the Wildcats.

A separate page for all of the award winners is contained on this website and will be updated with this year’s winners in the next couple of days.

.

This was an uncommon year from the standpoint of outstanding young talent and the parity of teams.  Every Wildcat team won at least three games and every team lost at least three games.   Only four games of the regular season were decided by more than nine points and none by more than 17.

.

The last place Pumas beat the first place Panthers in the regular season and then went on to become the hottest team in the second half of the schedule.  Neither of the two top-seeded teams made it to the tournament final.

.

If we used high school grade levels, our youngest ever second-leading scorer, Lupita Rocha would be the equivalent of a “freshman” and our youngest player ever over all–Renee Cafarelli–would be the same as  an “eighth-grader” playing on a high school team.

Each with 11 point wins . . .

Jaguars and Leopards for the Title

Jaguars 29-18

.

The Bob Davis Team Jaguars took the lead late in the first half and pulled away in the fourth quarter to down the league champion RGA Family Panthers 29-18 and earn a second straight appearance in the Courtney Davis Memorial Wildcat Classic tournament final.

.

The Jaguars will face the Ventura Trophy Leopards who led wire-to-wire and also posted an 11 point win in defeating The Jaffe Team Bearcats 27-16.

.

Allyson Liu led the Jaguars’ charge as she accounted for 10 points and nine rebounds, most of those coming in the final ten minute sprint to victory.    Mya Huber was a truckload of trouble for the Panthers as the power forward repeatedly drove through the Panther defense which resulted in 14 trips to the free throw line.

.

Siena Worthy led the Panthers in scoring.

.

The Jaguars had lost to the Panthers twice in the regular season.  The final score was the most points scored by the Jaguars in 2012 for a single game and tied for the fewest given up in a single Jaguar game as well.

.

Leopards 27-16

.

For the Leopards, it was guard Rachel Jamroz who stormed her way to five points in the first two-and-a-half minutes to put the Leopards up 5-0 and a lead that would last throughout the game.

.

The Bearcats were without the Wildcat League’s leading scorer, but with patience and composure, the defending champions got to within a single point on several occasions, the last coming late in the third quarter.

.

Leopard forward Olivia Anderson wasn’t about to let the ‘Cats get ahead and she hit twice in the lane, then went to the free throw line and the Leopards steadily built their lead.

.

Jamroz had 13 points for the winners and Anderson had six.

.

Camery Boggio-Shean led the Bearcats in scoring with some well-chosen and mechanically sound shooting.

.

The two teams square off for the 20th annual tournament championship on Monday at 7pm at the Ventura Missionary Church gym.  The Leopards defeated the Jaguars twice during the regular season, the first time 26-21, and 25-23 just eleven days ago.

Natalie Lansberg repeatedly sealed the strong block on inbounds plays

“Smart” fourth quarter . . .

Jaguars in semi-finals

22-18

.

Don’t let Vanessa Smart’s headband and pink shoes cause you to think she is a basketball star wanna-be.  Vanessa Smart is the real deal.  And, the young guard proved it in the fourth quarter of The Bob Davis Team Jaguars’ 22-18 win over the Williams Physical Thereapy Pumas on Saturday.

Vanessa Smart| owned the fourth quarter, flourishing in the Jaguars’ full court press

.

With the Jaguars up by a single basket, Smart parlayed an assist pass from forward Mya Huber into a score in the key.  After the Pumas tied it with scores from center Genna Williams and guard Natalie Lansberg, Smart drove to the key, then through the key, then around the key, then to the free throw line.  After a steal in the full court press, Smart scored from 18 feet out — dead center — to give the Jaguars the only points they would need to move on to the semifinals of the Twentieth Annual Courtney Davis Wildcat Classic tournament.

.

Allyson Liu sealed the win when the Jaguar press presented her with the ball for a final score  as the game ended.

.

Although Smart had the goods in the fourth quarter, it was the free throw shooting of Huber that made perhaps the biggest difference because the Pumas were just 2-for-16 from the free throw line while the Jaguars finished 5-for-14 with Huber leading the way by going 3-for-6.

.

Lupita Rocha led the Jaguars with eight points while Huber and Liu added five.

.

Genna Williams led the Pumas with eight.  Jordan Howery had four but it has been Howery’s double-digit rebounding that propelled the Pumas from and 0-5 start to winning the second-half of the season.

.

You can teach rebounding skills day and night and not come up with rebounders
like Jordan Howery or Erica Dorman because they have the one ingredient
that is common to all outstanding rebounders:  They want the ball!

.

The Jaguars play the champion Panthers on Saturday with the winner advancing to the championship game.
