Fuentes  2nd quarter charge . . .

Panthers stay undefeated, 26-19

Karina Fuentes came up with six points and five steals in seven minutes of the second quarter to bring the RGA Family Panthers from a small deficit to a lead they did not relinquish in a 26-19 win over the Williams Physical Therapy Inc. Pumas.

,

All of Fuentes scores in that time  were different as she stole a pass and finished with a layup, then posted low and scored off of one excellent power dribble and power up, then finished things off with a soft set shot near the right elbow.

.

And just as Fuentes took a break, Emiline Bova took over with six of her points in the final three-and-a-half minutes of the  half.  When Katie Bova opened the second half with a shot from the right short-corner, the Panthers had completed a 14-2 surge.

Karina Fuentes – great performance, both sides of the ball.

.

The Pumas weren’t without some firepower of their own as they were trying out a new weapon, Emily Herring, who was playing her first Wildcat game of the season.  Don’t think Emily isn’t experienced, however.  Last Summer as a sixth grader, Emily finished the season as the League’s fourth leading scorer and right now, her 11 points after one game would be enough to lead the league except she hasn’t yet played enough games.

.

Despite the impressive second quarter sprint by the Panthers, the score was never separated by more than three possessions for either team.

.

Herring was the leading scorer with 11 and Genna Williams added six for the Pumas.  Williams is second among all scorers for the season.

.

Fuentes and Emiline Bova each had eight for the winners and both are in the top six of all league scorers.  Leora Munden worked hard for the ball and came up with six rebounds.

Yutuc hits double figures again . . .

Bearcats finish strong, 23-9

.

Wildcat League top scorer Michelle Yutuc hit double figures once again running up 11 points in only two and a half quarters as The Jaffe Team Bearcats broke away from a tight first half to post a 23-9 win over the Ventura Trophy Leopards.

.

Although the Leopards never led, they made life miserable for the talented and fast Bearcats for the first 20 minutes.  Trailing by six at the start of the second quarter, the Leopards were ignited by a rattling three-pointer cranked up by guard Rachel Jamroz and followed a short time later by a banking putback by forward Olivia Anderson to get the Leopards to within one.

.

.
Not to worry.  The Bearcats have been the most explosive transition team of 2012 and they proved it by racing to  eight points in less than three minutes of the third quarter to put the game safely out of reach.

.

Along with Yutuc, Dezy Guerrero and Claire Hansen combined for eight points.

.

The Leopards were led in scoring by Jamroz with help from Anderson, Shelby Collet, and Sara Siddens who proved that high-energy and determination are valuable commodities in basketball.
