Fusion Gold: The last day . . .
to celebrate
Four Years
Ventura, California
May 15, 2009
After four years of winning tournaments, struggling through setbacks, staying in hotels, working hard, and training for high school basketball, Fusion Gold officially ended it's mission in Ventura on May 15, 2009.
With all ten players and family members gathered, coach Jim Pando arranged for a two-hour limousine tour of Ventura, compliments of K.C., the limo owner.
Ally into the limo.
While some only hope for Britney Spears, we set our sights higher and got a glimpse of Casey!
Marena, Marissa, Bianca, and Jasmynn on the pier in Ventura.
The Fusion trek headed for the Pacific View Mall where the girls asked for money to go shopping, altogether missing the point that this was photo-op day.
Pacific View Mall, Ventura
Coach Jim is so magical, he can evoke water from the ground.
And from there, the caravan returned to the Concord Pool for volleyball, dinner, awards, and emotional good-byes.
Coaches thanked the girls and families for their commitment and hard work and the joys of being together on such a long and memorable journey.
Each of the players was handed a 9x12 plaque with her name on it and a prosaic inscription of "You've Got What it Takes", an adaptation from the song "Better Days" by the Goo Goo Dolls.
Each player received a collage poster of team activities in the past few years and each girl was handed a single white rose to reaffirm that each of them is strong and beautiful.
Families graciously prepared the meal and honored coaches Jim and Bobby with signed collages, handwritten thank you cards, and fabulous stadium blankets with the name "Fusion" and each of the player's names boldly shown on the front.
Nora Flynn was given an ovation for her untiring service to the girls and families of Fusion. Without Nora, much of the good that came from the past few years might never have happened.
While travel teams must end at some point, saying goodbye after hundreds of hours together, through thick and thin, and sharing so much joy, is not easy because our time of being together on a regular basis ends.
For all who were involved in the wonderful mission of Fusion Gold --- thank you! You are loved and forever remembered.
Ventura is beautiful, but never more than on this day.
Four very pretty smiles.
Volleyball at Concord Pool.
Playing soon at a theatre near you.
Michele, Bianca, and Christina and no - that is not alcohol.
Marissa was with us on the first day and we were so glad she was with on the last day as well.
Emily, Jasmynn, and Marena . . . buds 4-evah.
Bianca . . . 13 or 23?
Team yell before the fountain erupts.
To the girls of Fusion Gold ---
I can build a winning team and be remembered for a season.
Or I can build a winning player and be remembered for a lifetime.

Fusion Gold was a travel team produced by the Ventura Wildcats to prepare players for high school basketball.

"You've Got What it Takes"
Well you ask me what I want this year,
And I'll try to make this good and clear,
Just the chance to show that You've Got What it Takes.
And you don't need trophies draped in bling,
Designer gear or neon things,
Just the chance to show that You've Got What it Takes.
So take these words,
And play them out,
'cause every one,
Is watching now.
And tonight's the night your world begins again.

Both Champions
August 15, 2009
The RGA Family Panthers won the regular season championship in July but with two starters out on the final day of the Courtney Davis Wildcat Classic, it was the East Ventura Optimist Pumas who walked away with a 37-22 victory and the trophies for winning the seventeenth annual tournament held at the Ventura Missionary gym.
Bob Davis, father of Courtney, was a special guest of the Wildcats honoring the memory of his beloved daughter.
It was a matter of too many Pumas with fresh legs wearing down the determined and talented Panthers who just ran out of gas in the late going.
Until then, the Panthers had the best of things, launching into an early five point lead that led to a 15-14 advantage at halftime, thanks to a three-point rocket by Maria Barnes-Jones from the right corner and two from Makayla Flinn from the wings.
As expected, Brittany Rodriguez gave early leverage at the block and the young power forward didn't disappoint as she powered up for six points in the first half, two of those from a powerful off-the-dribble pass from the point to the block by Camille Werner.
Camille Werner handled the ball with perfection under pressure and zinged two of the best assist passes of the season, right off of the dribble.
Natalie Smith proved her All Wildcat status with 13 points in just the second half.
Flinn led the Panthers with nine points, all from three point shots. Rodriguez finished with six points and five rebounds while aggressive forward Andrea Centeno came away with six rebounds and four steals.
Panthers (l to r) Brittany Rodriguez (six points, six rebounds), Julia Brady (4 points), Mariah Barnes-Jones (corner three-pointer).
The Pumas finished the season with a record of 10-1. The Panthers were 8-2.

Lions Come From Behind Again
35-33
Aug. 1, 2009
Fresh from a one-point, last-second win on Wednesday, the Dole Foods Lions did it again, this time taking the lead over the V.N. Jaguars on the last basket of the game, an Alliea Jordan put-back of a missed free throw.
The 35-33 win vaults the fourth-seeded Lions into the semifinals where they will play the hottest team in the Wildcats, the E. Ventura Optimist Pumas.
The Jaguars were fast out of the blocks as All-Wildcat guard Ashley Adams, the most-awarded player in the 2009 Wildcats, pumped in the Jags first ten points that contributed to an early seven point lead thanks in part to another All-Wildcat guard Katie Campbell who arched the first of her three, three-pointers.
Katie Campbell's first three-pointer gave the Jaguars a solid early lead.
It was one thing to shoot the lights out, but it became another when it seemed as if the Jags were shooting with the lights off. The green-n-gold went a total of 12 minutes without a single point while the Lions had six from Jordan and a lead that would be short-lived because --- remember those three Katie Campbell three-pointers? --- Yup --- back-to-back and just 42 seconds apart.
Alleia Jordan (30) had six straight points to revive the Lions in the first half and her putback of a missed free throw was the last points of the game and all the Lions needed to win.
Once again, the Jaguars constructed a seven-point advantage and once-again another drought set in and the Lions were back to within two.
Compounding the Jaguars problems was Adams fouling out in the fourth quarter.
The Lions, who had been trying to get the ball inside to Jasmine Watkins, the tallest Wildcat of them all, finally found success and Watkins tied the game with a shot in the key and a free throw from being fouled.
Jasmine Watkins made-shot and subsequent free throw tied the game.
Alyssa McLaughlin and Nikki Harasta answered on the other end for the Jaguars but Watkins came back for another game-tieing free throw followed by a miss that was rebounded by Jordan who wasn’t blocked out and Jordan put it off the backboard and into the basket for the win.
Alyssa McLaughlin is deadly near the basket and she kept the Jaguars in contention.
Jordan, Watkins, and Aubri Smith all had 10 points for the Lions.
Aubri Smith was a monster when it came to stealing the ball, powering upcourt, and finishing with her patented hanging jump shot.
The game might have been won at the line except that the teams were just 3-for-12.

Three Bengals in double figures . . .
45-25
Aug. 1, 2009
The Jay’s Automotive Bengals led all the way and placed three players in double figures to post a 45-25 win over the B.D. Team Bearcats and advance to the semifinals to play the top-seeded RGA Family Panthers.
The opportunistic Bengals used their height advantage near the basket to get repeated put-backs over their shorter opponents and the girls of gold also profited from a strong transition game that was triggered by repeated steals.
Christina Gonzalez led the winners with 17 points which, by itself might be noteworthy, but it’s the way she did it that was even more telling. She started with four points close in, then after a Bengals timeout, lofted a soft three-point set shot, and finished the first half with a baseline cut past a double screen and a 14 footer in the left lane.
Christina Gonzalez had 17 points.
The Bearcats retaliated with Holly Guzman and Makayla Flinn combining for an 11-4 spurt that got the ‘Cats to within 10 points at the end of three and the ‘Cats seemed ready for a strong run to the finish.
Makayla Flinn has gotten better and better with each week of the Summer season.
Instead, Amy Jameson erupted for eight points and with help from Gonzalez, Maleea Christian, and Raquel Rodriguez, the Bengals blasted their way to a 14-4 advantage and a berth in the semifinals of the Courtney Davis Memorial Wildcat Classic.
Maleea Christian is a strong scorer and perhaps even better on the boards.
Behind Gonzalez, Bengal scoring was augmented by Christian with 12 and Jameson with 10.
Jameson has been gaining momentum all summer and finished with her fourth straight game in double figures.

46-23
Aug. 1, 2009
The East Ventura Optimists Pumas have been the hottest team in the Wildcats recently with seven straight wins and all but one of those by 15 or more points. Couple that with a defense that springs to the ball and has kept every opponent under 27 points and there is explanation enough for their 46-23 win over the Courtney Davis Leopards in the opening round of the Courtney Davis Memorial Wildcat Classic.
The first half was electric as Madeline Gremaud had two steals and two assists in the first three minutes and guard Natalie Smith seven points in the opening frame and the Pumas made it clear they had come to play.
Natalie Smith had a game-high 19 points.
Jennifer “O’Rocket” Orozco put the exclamation on that point when she stole the ball, drove hard, executed a clever double-crossover in the key and put the Pumas up 13-2.
The Leopards had a few ideas of their own, however, and by halftime, they had the score knotted 19-19 founded on eight points by guard Casey Collet and six scoreless minutes by the Pumas.
Casey Collet - eight of the Leopards first 12 points.
The Pumas won the second half 27-4.
One might think that the basket on one end was more congenial than the other except that Smith didn’t care which basket was before her. She had nine in the first half and 10 in the second. In short, Miss Smith couldn’t miss. Like many games, she had three, three-pointers.
Orozco added 12 points to the Puma total while Casey Collet (8) and Robin Fallandy (6) led the Leopards.
Robin Fallandy is not only All-Wildcat, but she is one of the all time favorites among coaches.

The East Ventura Optimist Pumas (9-1) used a 16-0 fourth quarter advantage to post their 8th win in a row, this one 37-28 over the defending tournament champion Dole Foods Lions.
The Lions built an early lead that reached seven points early in the second quarter, but the Pumas came back to post a two point advantage at the half.
In a somewhat unlikely event, the Pumas dropped in a total of just two points in the third quarter and found themselves down by four points with just six minutes to go.
But oh my, what a six minutes.
Jamie Tweit started the fireworks with two shots in the ten-foot range followed by two scores each from Rebecca Negrete and Jennifer Orozco, and just for good measure, a 16 footer by Natalie Smith for a total of 16 points while the Lion guns went silent.
Jamie Tweit (ball) started the Pumas fourth quarter blitz.
And by the time it was over, so was the game because the Pumas were up 34-24 with just two minutes to play and only seven points left to be scored by the two teams.
Smith and Orozco had 11 points each and Tweit had six for the winners.
Aubri Smith tallied 13 for the Lions and Jasmine Watkins dropped in 11.
Aubri Smith with her high-flying, long-delayed, long-range jump shots had 13. She is the League's third-leading all time scorer behind Lindsey Albrant who played more games and Katie Emard who once scored all 28 of the Lions points in a semifinal game.
The Pumas will play the Summer League champion Panthers on Saturday at noon at the VMS gym.

Panthers Return to History
43-29
Aug. 8, 2009
The RGA Family Panthers (8-1) are the most storied team in Wildcat Classic tournament history and the 2009 edition should be no exception.
Using a 14-0 first quarter, the Panthers had exactly the margin of the final score, 43-29 over the Jay's Automotive Bengals, and a return to the game that has seen lots of navy blue over the years.
The Bengals seemed tight in the first quarter and no wonder; they were playing a team that has been at the top of the standings all summer.
It was as if the Bengals mirrored their entire season all in one game, starting slowly and steadily becoming proficient until, in the end, they were as good as anyone.
A basket early in the second quarter by Top Cat Award winner Amy Jameson got things started for the Bengals who rallied behind successive scores from Maleea Christian and by halftime, the Bengals had actually narrowed the difference to an even dozen, 22-10.
Amy Jameson had five straight double-figures games and got the Bengals offense going in the second quarter.
Kayalin Irby had 12 points and finished the season as the League's second-leading scorer.
The margin reached 37-16 before the Bengals gritted their teeth as they have all season and showed every one the definition of "heart" as they scored 13 of the game's last 19 points.
Kayalin had 12 for the winners and outstanding power forward Brittany Rodriguez eight. All but one Panther scored.
Jameson had 10, Christian eight, Mikela Moore seven for the Bengals.
Bengal Mikelya Moore (left) was 7-and-7 for the girls of gold.
The Panthers come in with no apparent weaknesses and the ability to score almost at-will.
The Pumas come in with the League's longest winning streak and lowest points-per-game defense.
Game time is scheduled for noon at the VMS gym although television setup requirements may alter the start time slightly.

Bengals Put It All Together
39-18
July 18, 2009
The Jay's Automotive Bengals have been toying with the idea of winning all summer and they finally got the job done in an impressive 39-18 win over the Dole Foods Lions.
Guard/forward Amy Jameson went ballistic, scoring 14 of the game's 18 points in less than 10 minutes of the first half to lead the Bengals to a 24-8 halftime lead.
The Lions were hampered by the absence of All Wildcat guard Aubri Smith who was out with a foot injury and the sudden collapse of Crystal Altman, an outstanding forward.
Aubri is expected to return next week and a late afternoon report from the hospital indicated that Crystal suffered from dehydration and will be okay.
(Challenge players: We talked about hydration just this week. Hydration is an every day event, not just game days. Athletes need to train themselves to drink water throughout the week to avoid dehydration, muscle cramping, fatigue, etc. Sodas don’t hydrate and neither do most of the sports drinks on the market. If it isn’t pure water or the label doesn’t say the drink “hydrates”, then it is not a drink for an athlete).
By virtue of "effective margin" the Bengals moved into sixth place in the Wildcat League.
Coach Smith of the Lions applauded the Bengals' win and commented, "We wanted to win, but I also wanted to see the Bengals win this season."
The Lions were led in scoring by Alleia Jordan and Jasmine Watkins, each with eight points.
Alleia Jordan ran the offense and along with Jasmine Watkins, led the Lions in scoring.
Jameson had 16 and is solidly entrenched in the League's top scorers. Guard Elissa Root and Christina Gonzalez each contributed eight points and Raquel Rodriguez five to the Bengals' win.
Elissa Root (3) was second in team scoring with eight.

Leopards win 3/4ths of game, but . . .
30-24
July 18, 2009
If the game had started at 10:17 instead of 10:04, the Courtney Davis Leopards might have won because from that time on, the Leopards outscored the E. Ventura Optimist Pumas.
However, since three-quarters doth not a game make, it was the Pumas who drilled in 13 of the games first 14 points and held onto second place in the Wildcat League with a 30-24 win.
The Pumas sprang from the blocks with a three pointer by Natalie Smith followed by a Smith-to-Jennifer Orozco assist and score at the left elbow.
Natalie Smith (teal) connected on a three to start Pumas scoring. She finished with 15 points.
The Leopards responded with a free throw from Casey Collet but the Pumas seemed unfazed as they went back to shots at the elbows by Smith, Clarissa Magallon and Maryssa Rillo. One more score from eight feet out by Hannah Harader had the Pumas up by ten at the half.
Maryssa Rillo was part of the elbow brigade of shooters in the first quarter.
The Leopards came alive with twice as many third quarter points as they had in the entire first half, initialized by forward Jessica Murillo’s three-pointer from backcourt and followed by successive scores from Collet to get the margin under ten at the end of three.
Casey Collet (white/center) moved further up the scoring charts with 15 points.
Kim Cagle pushed the Pumas back into a double-digit lead with her shot at the start of the fourth quarter before Collet and Lindsey Moser combined for seven straight points to get the Pumas’ back into the game. Subsequent steals by Orozco stopped the Leopards’ momentum.
Kim Cagle played hard and scored a key basket late in the game.
Smith had 15 for the Pumas while Collet had 15 for the Leopards.
Just as we have been saying about the Bengals this season and their potential to win, the Leopards have recently shown significant upward trends and is one team that seems poised to produce an upset win. Unfortunately, neither team will surprise anyone this week because they play each other, but keep an eye on them when the tournament begins.

Reason enough to do the Wildcats
Katie with three three’s . . .
Jag-Guards – Too Much Speed
47-25
July 18, 2009
It might be time to unbolt Katie Campbell and see if she is girl or machine.
The fierce little guard bombed in three three-pointers in under three minutes with nothing-but-net swooshes that seemed far too precise to be human. And, all three were different: Square-up, set shot, jump stop.
Yet in the beginning, Katie wasn’t the biggest worry for the B.D. Team Bearcats because another V.N. Jaguar guard, Ashley Adams, drove and cut and popped for eight points in the first eight minutes to put the Jaguars solidly in front at the first buzzer which led the Jags to a 47-25 win.
Ashley Adams started the game with eight points in eight minutes to give the Jaguars a 10-4 first quarter lead.
Nikki Harasta, Paige Larson, Jenna Wolverton, and Hailee Mace kept the heat turned up by sprinting to 10 straight points to begin the second quarter before Bearcats coach Doug Lakin called for a 30-second time out to recharge his troops.
Nikki Harasta was in early foul trouble but made her presence felt in the time she was in with repeated steals and hustle for the ball.
The time-out worked as the ‘Cats finished the half scoring all of the points, split between hard-charging guard Holly Guzman and tough frontliner Sammantha White.
Holly Guzman had 21 points and continues to lead League scorers.
Coach Lakin called another timeout and, once again, it payed it off.
Sort of.
The ‘Cats returned to the floor and surged for six straight points, four by Guzman and two by tall center and a very serious worker, Kailtyn Sloniker who pivoted at the high post and made a very nice shot. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to win the game.
(A month ago, Miss Sloniker would not have made either the move nor the form-shot but she has worked hard and continues to show her potential for basketball.)
Guzman scored all but four of the Bearcats’ points and continues to lead the League in scoring.
Campbell had 13 for the Jaguars and did not play the fourth quarter. Adams had 12 and McLaughlin eight.
The teams were a combined 0-for-8 at the free throw line.

42-41
July 25, 2009
Home alone isn’t always a bad thing. Just ask Panther forward Brittany Rodriguez.
Miss R. found herself at home on the blocks all by herself and the power forward calmly uncorked repeated power-up bank shots on her way to 17 points and a 42-41 win
for the RGA Family Panthers over the V.N. Jaguars.
Brittany Rodriguez had a barrage of points from the block.
The victory gave the Panthers the Wildcat Summer League regular season championship.
The win also gives the Panthers the top seed in the Courtney Davis Memorial Wildcat Classic championship tournament in August.
As good as all of that might sound for the Panthers, it was the Jaguars who led the entire game until the very end of the third quarter after leading at halftime by eight.
Hailie Mace drove hard for four points in the first 50 seconds to trigger a brilliant first half. The opportunistic guard stole everything b

Leopards Continue Ascent 39-24
July 15, 2009
A game that was close for the first half was put away in the third quarter as the Courtney Davis Leopards overcame the determined BD Team Bearcats 39-24. The win puts the Leopards into third place at the schedule break.
Holly Guzman opened scoring with a runner in the key 90 seconds into the game followed a minute later by a long jump shot by teammate Jayla Albanez and the Bearcats were up 4-0.
Jayla Albanez is a big time prospect with a big time jump shot.
The Leopards retaliated when Casey Collet careened a short bank shot and Robin Fallandy hit four straight free throws to take the lead. On the strength of Fallandy’s shooting, the Leopards were a remarkable 11-for-13 from the line.
Robin Fallandy had eight points, six steals, and went four-for-four at the foul line in 30 seconds.
Guzman, Albanez, and Sammantha White all scored for the Bearcats to close the first quarter with the ‘Cats in the lead.
Fallandy, Savanna Vizzo and Lindsey Moser split the net without interruption to give the Leopards a small lead that they would not forfeit the rest of the game. In the eight point run, Fallandy had six steals.
The Bearcats made one more run at the Leopards when Casey-Lee Emery hit a 10-footer, Jade Werre a bank shot, and Makayla Flinn a layup off of a Guzman assist. Their scoring got the ‘Cats to within two but that was as close as they would get.
Makayla Flinn (24) applied full court pressure. Her layup in the second quarter narrowed the margin to two points.
The two teams combined to put 12 players on the scoreboard led by Collet’s 14 and Fallandy’s eight while Guzman had seven for the Bearcats.
Erica Jaques made a power drive to the basket in the third quarter and finished strong.

39-23
July 15, 2009
The RGA Family Panthers were concerned about the Dole Foods Lions; after all, the Lions have three-time All Wildcat guard Aubri Smith. If fear is good for an adrenalin rush, then maybe that would explain how the Panthers came out full of fire, took a 17-4 lead, and won by an impressive 39-23 score.
The Lions kept it close for the first eight minutes before disaster struck.
Aubri went down with a recurrent foot injury and limped the remainder of the game. As a result, one of the most-prolific career scorers in Wildcat history didn’t score and the Lions’ hopes of staying with the Panthers were severely hobbled.
Margaux Ugalino gave the Lions a lift when she picked off successive rebounds and then stole the ball but the Lions just could not hit on the other end until Ugalino’s driving layup brought the Lions’ deficit down to six points which was a timely response to the Panthers’ earlier 13 point run.
Kayalin Irby had 17 points and Klio Irby, a young guard with major skillage, had eight. Brittany Rodgriguez and Diana Catapusan each scored four.
Camille Werner led the Panthers from the point. Here she passes to Klio Irby who was a deadly shooter and the Panthers' second-leading scorer.
Diana Catapusan with a 10-footer to end the first half scoring. Diana has been showing more each week why she is an outstanding prospect.
The Lions were led by Alleia Jordan with 10 and Jasmine Watkins with seven.
Alleia Jordan led the Lions with 10 points.

If an offensive player is standing in the key while the ball is shot repeatedly for more than three seconds, is it a violation?
Answer at the end of this page
37-24
July 11, 2009
It took Casey Collet exactly eight seconds to show her hand as the tall guard popped a three-pointer from the right perimeter off the opening tip and the Courtney Davis Leopards were off to a 37-24 win over the Jay's Automotive Bengals. The win pushes the Leopards up to within one game of third place.
As nice as Collet’s opening salvo was from the outside, it was the Leopards' persistent inside play that proved to be the difference.
Utilizing a give-and-go scheme with jump stops in the key, Jessica Murillo put up six points in three minutes of the first quarter, Collet a score from underneath, and Robin Fallandy a put-back from the left block and the first quarter closed with the Leopards well in front.
Robin Fallandy had several rebounds and was part of the Leopards offensive run in the first quarter.
The Bengals bounced back somewhat behind strong rebounding and transition play by center Mikela Moore and scoring from Moore and Nicole Aggarwal while Lindsey Moser did all of the scoring for the victorious Leopards in the second quarter.
Mikela Moore (left) was the leading rebounder and had 10 points for the Bengals.
Lindsey Moser (ball) scored all of the Leopards points in the second quarter.
The Bengals got to within nine points twice in the fourth quarter when Raquel Rodriguez scored six points in as many minutes.
But, Collet found the key open again and she put up 10 points in less than seven minutes to put the game away for the Leopards.
Collet had 15 and Murillo 14 to lead the Leopards while Moore had 10 and Rodriguez six for the Bengals.

and the game, 43-26
July 11, 2009
Guard Ashley Adams hit a three-pointer for the V.N. Jaguars to put her team in front 3-2, but from there, it was a blur of teal as the E. Ventura Optimist Pumas went on a 35-9 rampage leading to a 43-26 win to retain sole possession of second place in the Wildcat League.
Playing without three important power players, the Jaguars were no match for the taller Pumas who captured 75% of the rebounds and 100% of the momentum in the first half as Natalie Smith (13 points), Maryssa Rillo (12 points) and Clarissa Magallon (6 points in two minutes) were unstoppable on the offensive end and Jennifer Orozco (6 points) had five steals.
Natalie Smith (headband) had 13 points and Maryssa Rillo 12 to lead the Pumas in scoring.
Hailie Mace initiated a bit of a run for the Jaguars with two scores, Katie Campbell’s second three-pointer, and another score by Paige Larson as the Jaguars scored 14 of the game’s final 18 points.

Katie Campbell hit two more threes in an effort to get the Jaguars closer.

No.
Players may be in the key indefinitely as long as the ball is being shot or there is a loose-ball or other activity in which one team does not have firm possession of the ball. A shot on the basket terminates a team's possession of the ball. Therefore, any player may remain in the key indefinitely while the ball is being shot.

Pumas Stay in the Hunt
40-25 after fast start
July 1, 2009
The East Ventura Optimist Pumas needed three seconds to take an all-game lead as Jennifer Orozco streaked for a layup off the opening tip prompting Coach Jayson Root of the Jay’s Automotive Bengals to comment, “Well, that’s not the way we wanted to start.”
Orozco stole the ball and scored again 90 seconds later and in between Clarissa Magallon scored and the Pumas were off to a 40-25 win and sole possession of second place in the Wildcat League.
The Bengals Ashley Steinberger came up with one steal and three assists to account for the golden girls first three baskets, one to Christina Gonzalez and two more by Elyssa Root to close the margin to six points with three minutes left in the first quarter.
Christina Gonzalez (35) went hard to the basket often and led the Bengals in scoring.
Then, the other shoe dropped.
The Pumas swarmed the court and dropped in an amazing ten points in less than two minutes, almost enough points to last the entire game.
There’s one thing to remember about the Bengals however: They never say die.
With no subs and down by 18 points at the end of one, the Bengals outscored the Pumas 19-16 in the last 25 minutes supporting the ongoing theory that any team that takes the Bengals for granted will be making a mistake.
In fact, ten of the final 12 points went through the Gold basket and half of those came on alert assist passes by Amy Jameson.
Amy Jameson (far left/inbounding) played a great game with strong defense, smart shooting, and three consecutive assist passes to get the Bengals' fourth quarter offense rolling.
The Pumas were led in scoring by Natalie Smith with 21 points, all of those scored in just two quarters; a rate of 42 points per game.
Hannah Harader takes a shot at the ball as Mikela Moore pulls up her dribble.
The Bengals were led by the resurgence of Christina Gonzalez with eight points while Root had seven. Every Bengal player scored. And, the Bengals scored more points than the Pumas give up on a points-per-game basis.
Credit the coaches with some good work this summer as both teams shot exactly 50% from the free throw line.

Kayalin blows it open . . .
44-28
July 1, 2009
Kayalin Irby is a D-1 prospect and she can pretty much just turn it on whenever she wants which was early and often against the V N Jaguars as her first place RGA Family Panthers stormed to a 44-28 win.
For Kay (pronounced “Kie”), transition is an adventure in blast-and-crash and it’s relatively frightening to think of somebody getting in her way.
Kayalin Irby was unstoppable and finished with 22 points.
With the Panthers leading by just a single point, Irby hit the switch, scored eight points in less than seven minutes, got some help from Andrea Centeno and Brittany Rodriguez and the Panthers were up by eight after one quarter.
With Kay on the bench and Jaguar guard Katie Campbell lofting successive three pointers in 55 seconds to go with a nice shot inside, the Jaguars rallied to tie the game at the half.
Katie Campbell had two three pointers in 55 seconds and another score 19 seconds later to lead the Jaguars.
Kay time.
Kay powered her way to six points in 60 seconds to start second half scoring and with a nice score from guard Camille Werner, the halftime tie turned into an eight point lead for the Panthers; a lead they would not relinquish. Another score by Rodriguez put the Panthers up by double-digits and the lead never went single again.
Brittany Rodriguez (white) put the Panthers into a double-digit margin.
Campbell led the Jaguars with 12 points and Ashley Adams six but the plentiful gaggle of guards on the Jaguars could have scored much more had they been able to finish repeated breaks ahead of the Panthers defense. So frustrating was the problem that a four-on-zero break resulted in just one shot and no points. When they finish their breaks, the Jags are very hard to beat.
The teams combined for 29 fouls.
The Panthers were six for 12 from the line while the Jaguars started 2-for-2, then went 0-for-10 the rest of the way.
